Role Overview
This position sits at the heart of the hospital’s transfusion and diagnostic services, where you will manage biological samples from the moment they arrive until results are safely dispatched. You will prepare and issue blood products to surrounding health facilities, run infection screens, and perform blood grouping while maintaining rigorous quality and record-keeping standards. Your accuracy directly affects clinical decisions and patient safety, making this a role for detail-driven laboratory professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and scrutinise laboratory request forms, confirming that specimens are correctly labelled and suitable for analysis.
- Prepare clients for specimen collection, then collect, label, register and disaggregate samples for processing.
- Perform blood grouping, screen samples for transfusion-transmissible infections, and carry out other required examinations.
- Prepare reagents and stains, preserve test samples, and ensure that blood products are stored under the correct conditions.
- Issue blood and blood products to peripheral health facilities based on authorised requests, maintaining proper documentation throughout.
- Decontaminate work benches and uphold infection control and biosafety procedures in the laboratory.
- Record and write up results, maintain the analytical database, and generate laboratory reports for clinical teams.
- Manage laboratory stores, equipment and records, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper functioning of instruments.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, Forensic Science, or Biotechnology.
- Registration with the relevant professional body and possession of a valid practicing license.
- A cumulative six years of relevant work experience, including at least three years at the grade of Medical Laboratory Technologist II or in a comparable position.
- Computer literacy, including familiarity with laboratory information systems and standard office software.
- Strong understanding of specimen handling, blood banking protocols, quality assurance, and infection prevention practices.
- Meticulous documentation skills and the ability to work accurately under pressure.
