Laboratory Technician (Medical Services) Grade 5

Role Overview

This role centres on the reliable delivery of diagnostic laboratory services within a medical pathology setting. You will prepare and process human specimens, carry out routine investigative procedures, and ensure that test results are accurately documented and promptly communicated to the requesting clinicians. Your work directly supports medical diagnosis and patient care by maintaining high standards of laboratory accuracy and safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine and specialised laboratory procedures for pathological investigation, including specimen preparation, staining, and microscopic examination.
• Operate laboratory equipment and carry out regular quality control checks to ensure accurate and reliable test outputs.
• Maintain detailed and organised laboratory records for all tests conducted, including sample logs, results, and quality assurance documentation.
• Collect, verify, and dispatch laboratory test results to medical staff or relevant departments in a timely and confidential manner.
• Prepare reagents, culture media, and other materials required for daily laboratory investigations.
• Follow established infection control, biosafety, and waste disposal protocols when handling biological samples.
• Support the smooth running of the laboratory by performing any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification from a recognised training institution.
• Current registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board and possession of a valid practicing licence.
• A minimum of three years of practical experience working in a medical laboratory environment.
• Computer literacy, including proficiency with laboratory information systems and standard office software for data entry and reporting.
• Strong attention to detail, methodical working habits, and the ability to follow standard operating procedures accurately.
• Good communication and record-keeping skills to ensure clear documentation and effective collaboration with other laboratory and clinical staff.
