Job Description

Role Overview

This role centres on the accurate collection, processing, and analysis of biological specimens within a busy, round-the-clock multispecialty medical centre. The technician ensures every test result is reliable and reported swiftly, so clinicians can make informed treatment decisions without delay. Day-to-day work involves hands-on laboratory diagnostics, equipment upkeep, and strict adherence to safety protocols, directly supporting patient care in a high-pressure environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, label, and prepare blood, urine, tissue, and other samples according to established pre-analytical procedures, verifying patient identification and sample integrity at each step.
  • Execute diagnostic tests across haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology using both automated and manual methods, then validate and release results through the laboratory information system.
  • Identify critical or panic values immediately and alert the requesting clinician or nursing team to enable urgent medical intervention.
  • Participate in daily quality control runs, external proficiency testing, and internal audits to maintain compliance with accreditation standards such as ISO 15189 and national regulatory guidelines.
  • Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot automated analysers, centrifuges, and other lab equipment, scheduling preventive maintenance and logging all service activities.
  • Monitor reagent and consumable stock levels, place timely orders to avoid shortages, and check expiry dates to ensure only valid materials are used.
  • Follow biosafety and infection prevention protocols, including correct segregation of medical waste, decontamination of work surfaces, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, test logs, and LIS entries, ensuring confidentiality and legibility, and contribute to incident reports and workload statistics for continuous improvement.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a government-recognised institution.
  • Current registration and a valid practising licence from the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
  • At least two to three years of hands-on laboratory experience in a hospital, diagnostic centre, or multispecialty lab handling high sample volumes.
  • Proven competence with automated haematology and biochemistry analysers, as well as Laboratory Information Systems and electronic health records.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with meticulous attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and adjust to 24-hour shift schedules including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Clear communication skills in English and Swahili, both written and spoken, for interacting with patients during phlebotomy and with clinical staff.
  • High integrity, confidentiality, and a professional, empathetic approach to patient care and specimen collection.
