Job Description

Role Overview

This role sits at the bench of a busy hospital diagnostic laboratory, where you will follow each patient sample from the moment it arrives through to the point a verified result reaches the clinician who requested it. Because ward rounds, outpatient consultations, and surgical decisions all depend on reliable laboratory data, the accuracy and turnaround you deliver have a direct bearing on how quickly and confidently patients are treated. You will work alongside fellow laboratory staff within established quality and biosafety frameworks, taking personal ownership of the tests you run and the equipment you handle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, label, and prepare patient specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue, checking that each sample is suitable for the test requested before analysis begins.
  • Perform routine and specialised diagnostic tests to the laboratory's agreed turnaround times so that requesting clinicians receive results when they are needed.
  • Set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot bench instruments and analysers, and keep them clean and maintained according to schedule.
  • Review, verify, and record results, flagging abnormal or critical findings promptly and escalating them to the requesting clinician or senior laboratory staff.
  • Uphold laboratory hygiene, safety, and infection-control standards, including the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Track reagent and consumable stock levels, raise requisitions in good time, and store supplies under the conditions they require.
  • Follow quality assurance and standard operating procedures, participating in internal checks and corrective action when results fall outside acceptable limits.
  • Keep accurate registers and quality-control records so that every result remains traceable and audit-ready.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences (or an equivalent qualification recognised for registration).
  • Current registration and a valid practising licence with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technicians Board (KMLTTB).
  • A minimum of one to two years of relevant hands-on laboratory experience, ideally in a clinical or hospital diagnostic setting.
  • Solid working knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and quality control practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability, with clear communication skills for reporting findings and raising concerns with clinicians and colleagues.

To apply, send your CV, certificates, and valid practising licence to [email protected]. The application deadline is 21st September 2026.
