Role Overview
This position sits at the point where public health theory meets practice: you will be the person who turns classroom concepts into hands-on competence for the next generation of public health and environmental health practitioners at Alupe University. Day to day, that means running skills-lab sessions, setting up field demonstrations and diagnostic tests, and keeping the equipment and procedures that support them reliable and audit-ready. The role matters because the quality of graduates entering Kenya's health, water and sanitation workforce depends directly on how well they have been trained in real testing, surveillance and inspection work — and on the standards you uphold in the laboratory and the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, set up and facilitate practical experiments, skills-lab sessions and field demonstrations that build trainee competence in public health and environmental health practice.
- Carry out microbiological, physical and chemical analysis of water, soil, effluent and food samples, and interpret and document the results accurately.
- Implement water quality monitoring programmes, apply sanitation technologies, and run pest and vector surveillance and disease control activities in line with established protocols.
- Calibrate, troubleshoot and maintain laboratory and field equipment, and manage consumable and equipment inventories so that teaching and testing are never interrupted.
- Draft, review and enforce Standard Operating Procedures covering laboratory, field and safety practice.
- Supervise and assess trainees during practicals and field placements, coaching them on technique, safety and professional conduct.
- Conduct field-based public health interventions, food premises inspections and environmental monitoring, and report findings to the relevant university and regulatory channels.
- Maintain accurate laboratory and field records, and support compliance with professional licensing and accreditation requirements.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or Environmental Health from a recognised and accredited institution.
- A valid and current Practicing License issued by the Public Health Officers and Technicians Council (PHOTC).
- Registered membership of the Association of Public Health Officers – Kenya (APHOK) in good standing.
- Demonstrated merit and ability in facilitating practical demonstrations, managing laboratory equipment, or supervising students within an academic or training environment.
- A proven track record of executing field-based public health interventions, food inspections or environmental monitoring.
- Practical demonstration and instruction: able to design, set up and facilitate practical experiments, skills-lab sessions and field demonstrations for public health trainees.
- Environmental and diagnostic testing: proficiency in microbiological, physical and chemical analysis of water, soil, effluent and food samples.
- WASH and vector control operations: hands-on expertise in water quality monitoring, sanitation technology applications, and pest and vector surveillance and disease control protocols.
- Equipment and SOP management: able to calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory and field equipment, manage inventories, and author and enforce Standard Operating Procedures.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
