Job Description

Role Overview

This role puts you in charge of the entire HR function for a building materials and home improvement company, covering office staff as well as warehouse and operational teams. Reporting to senior leadership, you will run payroll every month, handle employee relations, lead recruitment and appraisals, and keep the business compliant with Kenyan employment and tax rules. Your work keeps the workforce paid accurately, supported and legally compliant, which in turn keeps daily operations running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly payroll cycle from start to finish: confirm base salaries, overtime, commissions, allowances and statutory deductions, run the payroll, reconcile the figures, address pay discrepancies quickly and keep payroll data secure.
  • Update and safeguard employee records in both physical and electronic formats, tracking contract changes, leave balances and daily shift attendance.
  • Keep the company compliant with Kenyan employment law, tax duties and statutory HR rules.
  • Team up with department heads to identify staffing gaps, create job descriptions and run full recruitment drives.
  • Guide candidates through shortlisting and interviews, complete reference checks, issue contracts and deliver a structured onboarding experience.
  • Run probation evaluations, manage internal transfers and promotions, and handle exit clearance formalities.
  • Be the go-to person for staff questions, offering policy guidance to employees and managers, while leading disciplinary hearings, resolving grievances, monitoring absenteeism and stepping in with performance support when needed.
  • Organise regular performance appraisals, help department heads set clear operational targets, assess training needs and roll out focused development programs for operational staff.
  • Create monthly workforce reports for senior management that cover headcount, absenteeism, turnover and payroll trends, with practical recommendations.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or diploma in human resource management, business administration or a similar field.
  • At least five years of generalist HR experience that shows you can run a department on your own.
  • Experience in building materials, construction, retail distribution, logistics or manufacturing is strongly preferred.
  • A professional HR credential such as a Higher Diploma or CHRP, or active IHRM membership, would be a plus.
  • Practical, accurate experience running monthly payroll and handling Kenyan statutory filings.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume setting while managing a mix of operational and frontline teams.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and discretion, especially with sensitive staff matters.

What We Offer

  • A monthly salary of KSh 50,000 – KSh 60,000.
  • Full-time, on-site employment based on Mombasa Road, Nairobi.
  • The opportunity to lead the HR function independently and report to senior executive management.
