Role Overview
This is a generalist HR position based at a Kenyan flower or horticultural farm, where you will handle the full employee lifecycle for a largely seasonal and field-based workforce. Day to day, you will move between recruitment, payroll support, disciplinary processes, and on-site worker welfare, while making sure the farm remains compliant with both Kenyan labour law and the specific audit requirements of international buyers. Your work matters because the farm’s export licences, client relationships, and reputation depend on clean HR records and fair, transparent treatment of hundreds of workers.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate end-to-end recruitment for general farm labourers, supervisors, and casual workers, including shortlisting, interviewing, and issuing contracts.
- Maintain accurate employee files, attendance registers, and leave records across both permanent and seasonal staff, ensuring data is audit-ready at all times.
- Support the payroll process by verifying timesheets, overtime, deductions, and statutory contributions before submission to the payroll team.
- Facilitate induction and ongoing training sessions on workplace safety, company policies, and worker rights, particularly for new hires during peak harvest periods.
- Handle employee grievances, disciplinary hearings, and exit processes in line with Kenyan employment law and internal procedure.
- Prepare documentation and coordinate site visits for Fairtrade and KFC audit inspections, addressing any non-conformances promptly.
- Act as a liaison between management and workers on welfare matters such as housing, transport, medical care, and maternity or paternity leave.
- Advise line managers on HR policies, performance management, and staff relations issues as they arise in daily farm operations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Degree or Diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- At least 2–3 years of hands-on HR experience, ideally in a fast-paced operational environment with a large casual workforce.
- Experience in an agricultural, horticultural, or flower farm setting is a strong advantage, as is familiarity with seasonal labour dynamics.
- Working knowledge of Fairtrade standards or KFC (Kenya Flower Council) audit requirements, including how to prepare and present records for inspection.
- Active membership with IHRM Kenya (Institute of Human Resource Management).
- Full professional fluency in both English and Swahili, with clear written and verbal communication skills suitable for notices, reports, and worker briefings.
- Solid understanding of Kenyan employment law, statutory deductions, and grievance-handling procedures.
- Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle sensitive employee matters with confidentiality.
