Job Description

Role Overview

You will be the go-to person for keeping critical power and mechanical systems running reliably on a large military training estate. Day to day, you will inspect, service, and repair standby generators, compressor plant, ventilation systems, roller shutter doors, and lifting equipment, working both indoors and out in all weather. Your focus is on preventing breakdowns before they happen and responding fast when equipment fails, so that operational schedules are never disrupted.

This is a hands-on supervisory role within the Garrison Engineer’s Department. You will not only carry out complex fault-finding and repairs yourself but also direct labourers and junior tradespeople, ensure all work complies with military safety regulations, and act as Person in Charge for petroleum and mechanical systems. You need to be comfortable taking decisions under pressure and ready to be called out 24/7 for emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute routine inspections, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on all standby and operational generators, ensuring they remain in a constant state of readiness and setting realistic targets for completion.
  • Maintain and repair compressor plant, ventilation systems, roller shutter doors, and lifting equipment using the same disciplined approach.
  • Diagnose faults across mechanical and electrical systems, order the necessary spare parts, and keep accurate logbooks for every item of plant equipment.
  • Identify, make safe, and isolate faulty or hazardous installations in line with JSP 375 Volume 3 procedures, then organise and oversee the repair of the affected facility.
  • Act as Person in Charge for petroleum and mechanical systems, applying the Safe Systems of Work and maintaining a working knowledge of the Petroleum and Mechanical Systems Safety Rule Book.
  • Supervise and manage labourers and junior tradesmen, monitoring progress, offering constructive feedback, and keeping senior staff informed of progress and potential problems.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis, directing repair efforts and, when necessary, personally carrying out repairs and transporting materials and equipment.
  • Complete mandatory training in First Aid and Fire Awareness every two years and one year respectively, and carry out any other duties commensurate with your trade and grade as directed by the Mechanical and Electrical Manager.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Essential: Trade Test 1 in Electrical or equivalent, plus at least three years of hands-on experience in generator repair, troubleshooting, servicing, and general maintenance.
  • Essential: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent.
  • Essential: Proven knowledge of installation, maintenance, and repair methods for engines, compressors, generators, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Essential: Ability to apply maintenance, inspection, and emergency repair programme techniques to diagnose and resolve non-routine issues.
  • Essential: Familiarity with motorised and hand tools, heavy equipment operation, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices.
  • Desirable: Valid Kenya driving licence in Class B, C, and C1.
  • Desirable: Competence in electronic control module programming for generators, particularly FG Wilson PowerWizard, Deepsea, and Easygen software.
  • Desirable: Ability to interpret, explain, and implement standards, policies, regulations, and procedures, including BS 7671 and the IET Wiring Regulations.
  • Desirable: Supervisory experience and the ability to prepare technical reports following equipment failures and recommend remediation plans.
  • Training requirements: Willingness to complete training in Health and Safety at Work, COSHH awareness, Manual Handling, First Aid & Fire Awareness, equipment care, MOD Safety Rules (JSP 375 Vol 3), BS 7671, and Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Petroleum, Mechanical Systems, and Asbestos awareness as required.
  • Compliance: Must maintain medical fitness for breathing apparatus use, comply with Confined Spaces regulations, and remain in date for annual and biennial safety certifications.
