Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits at the centre of the bank's Treasury function, owning the liquidity position, the investment book and the asset-liability management framework that connects funding decisions to earnings and risk outcomes. Day to day, the holder directs where the bank's cash is placed and borrowed, keeps the securities portfolio working toward income targets, and watches interest-rate and settlement exposures so that no dealing activity drifts outside agreed limits. The value of the role shows up in the bank's cost of funds, the reliability of its settlement position, and its standing with both regulators and market counterparties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Position the bank's funds across currencies and tenors so that balances stay optimal — neither idle nor stretched — while serving both day-to-day settlement needs and return objectives.
  • Build and execute the department's asset-liability and investment strategy, translating it into targets for liquidity, revenue, investment income, securities trading profit and cost control.
  • Cultivate and maintain dealing relationships with domestic and offshore banks, brokers and financial institutions, negotiating facilities and growing the trading lines available to the bank.
  • Identify, measure and contain the market and settlement risks the desk carries daily, and enforce counterparty trading and credit limits across the dealing team.
  • Hold senior-level relationships with key customers, target clients, regulators and product partners on behalf of Treasury.
  • Keep every treasury position inside the bank's own risk thresholds and within Central Bank of Kenya prudential limits.
  • Work alongside the Treasurer and ALCO to shape and implement departmental and bank-wide strategy, including representation at meetings with the Central Bank, major banks and money market desks.
  • Review and sharpen operational procedures and controls, upholding KYC and risk standards throughout.
  • Lead, coach and appraise the reporting team — setting objectives, arranging training and development, and recognising strong performance — to build a proactive, performance-driven culture and a pipeline of future leaders.
  • Act as proxy to the FX trading desk as required.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as finance, economics, banking, accounting or a related discipline.
  • A relevant professional qualification in treasury, markets, accounting or risk, and current membership of a recognised professional body.
  • At least six years of overall experience in treasury or financial markets, including a minimum of two years at managerial level.
  • Working fluency with MS Office tools.
  • Solid grasp of FX procedures, prudential guidelines and market practice, with the credibility to engage management and staff at every level.
  • Demonstrated integrity and a self-driven, analytical approach to work under pressure.
  • Strong leadership, organisational and planning abilities, joined to sound problem-solving and negotiating skills.
  • Confident communication and formal presentation skills, applied both inside and outside the organisation.
  • A genuine drive for performance, teamwork and achievement within a fast-moving, competitive environment.

Why Join

The position carries real delegated authority over the ALM function and puts the holder in regular contact with the Central Bank of Kenya, major banks, brokers and international counterparties — an unusually broad platform for someone building a senior Treasury career. It also includes leadership of a dealing team, with responsibility for developing that team's knowledge and preparing its members for larger roles, and exposure to the FX trading desk through proxy cover.
