Job Description

Role Overview

This position keeps the plant's mechanical assets serviceable — from the initial fitting and alignment of new or reconditioned components through to the day-to-day repair work that keeps production running. Working across installation, planned maintenance and unplanned breakdowns, the holder of this role is the first line of defence against mechanical failure on site. The job suits someone who is comfortable both at the bench with precision instruments and out on the plant floor diagnosing faults under pressure, and who treats safe working and accurate record-keeping as part of the craft rather than an afterthought.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fit, assemble and install mechanical parts, machinery and ancillary equipment in line with approved drawings, tolerances and technical specifications.
  • Carry out alignment, clearance adjustment and component change-outs using the correct hand tools, power tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Undertake authorised cutting, grinding, welding and light fabrication work needed for repairs, modifications and equipment installation or commissioning.
  • Execute scheduled preventive maintenance routines and reactive corrective repairs, tracing mechanical faults to root cause and returning equipment to service quickly to protect plant uptime.
  • Run routine condition checks across assigned equipment — alignment, fastening integrity, lubrication levels, wear and leakage — and escalate anything abnormal without delay.
  • Support breakdown recovery and machine restoration efforts alongside the Mechanical Technician and other maintenance colleagues.
  • Observe HSEQ rules, Permit-to-Work and LOTOTO isolation procedures at all times, wear the prescribed PPE, report hazards, incidents and near misses, and keep work areas organised to 6S standards.
  • Maintain job cards, inspection sheets and maintenance records accurately and on schedule, and keep the Mechanical Technician informed on equipment condition, job progress and outstanding issues, while contributing improvement ideas through TPM, Kaizen and 6S activities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: KCSE certificate.
  • Trade qualification: Government Trade Test Grade III in Mechanical Fitting, or an equivalent recognised Mechanical Fitter certification.
  • Experience: A minimum of three (3) years in mechanical fitting, plant maintenance or industrial equipment repair, of which at least two (2) years should involve maintaining industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Documentation skills: Able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, assembly diagrams and technical specifications.
  • Technical skills: Competent in fitting, assembly, installation, fault diagnosis and troubleshooting; confident using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring instruments; practical welding and fabrication ability; working knowledge of plant machinery, hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Personal attributes: Strong safety discipline and procedure compliance, clear communication, effective teamwork, and the ability to work unsupervised and take ownership of assigned tasks.
  • Computer literacy: Basic computer knowledge for recording and reporting purposes.
  • Advantageous: A Craft Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or Plant Maintenance; formal welding and fabrication training; exposure to 6S and Autonomous Maintenance practices; and prior experience in steel processing, manufacturing or another heavy industrial setting.
