Facilitators

Role Overview

As a Facilitator with Hatua Network, you will be on the front line of youth development in Mombasa County, running the sessions and activities through which young people learn new skills, stretch themselves, and grow in confidence. Much of your week is spent face to face with participants — leading group activities, guiding discussions, encouraging individuals who need a nudge, and making sure every young person in the room feels seen and supported. The role matters because the quality of the relationship a young person has with their facilitator often determines whether they keep showing up, stay engaged, and leave with a stronger belief in what they can do.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and facilitate structured group sessions and activities for children and young people, adapting content to suit different ages, abilities, and confidence levels.
• Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where participants feel comfortable contributing, asking questions, and making mistakes as part of learning.
• Build trusting, respectful relationships with participants and act as a positive role model in their lives.
• Observe how individuals are progressing and respond to those who are struggling, disengaged, or in need of additional encouragement.
• Keep accurate records of attendance, participation, and session notes, and share observations and concerns with your supervisor.
• Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and community members to keep them informed and involved in participants' progress.
• Prepare materials, set up and pack down venues, and manage the practical logistics that keep sessions running smoothly.
• Work collaboratively with fellow Facilitators and colleagues, and take part in team meetings and ongoing training to sharpen your practice.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or bachelor's degree; recent college graduates are strongly encouraged to apply, as this role is well suited to someone at the start of their career.
• Genuine passion for working with young people and supporting their learning, growth, and confidence.
• Previous experience with children or young people is preferred — this could include volunteering, mentoring, tutoring, coaching, community work, or similar.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to hold the attention of a group and connect one to one.
• Patience, empathy, reliability, and the maturity to be a consistent, trustworthy presence for participants.
• Good organisational skills, including the ability to plan sessions and keep simple records up to date.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and to take direction and feedback constructively.
• Based in or able to work in Mombasa County, in a community-based, in-person setting.
