Role Overview

This is an entry-level clinical training placement for individuals beginning a career in ophthalmic care. Trainees spend their time moving between structured classroom instruction, supervised hands-on practice and rotations through different areas of the Hospital, building the practical judgement and professional habits that safe patient care depends on. The role matters because the Hospital's ability to deliver efficient, compassionate eye care rests on a steady pipeline of well-trained support staff who understand both the technical and human sides of the work.

Key Responsibilities

• Complete the full programme of structured instruction, including assigned reading, demonstrations and knowledge assessments.
• Rotate through the Hospital's clinical areas as scheduled, observing and then practising procedures under direct supervision.
• Carry out delegated patient-support tasks once competency has been demonstrated and signed off by a supervisor.
• Communicate with patients and their families clearly and courteously in English and Kiswahili, including explaining what to expect during a visit.
• Protect patient confidentiality at all times, handling records, images and personal details only through approved channels.
• Follow infection prevention, safety and hygiene protocols in every clinical setting entered.
• Keep accurate records of training activities, competencies achieved and feedback received from supervisors.
• Take part in scheduled reviews and evaluations, acting on feedback and reporting any concerns about patient safety or conduct immediately.

Requirements & Qualifications

• KCSE mean grade of D+ (Plus) or an equivalent qualification.
• Minimum grade of C (Plain) in English or Kiswahili.
• Minimum grade of C- (Minus) in Biology or Biological Sciences.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Kiswahili.
• Basic numeracy skills — assessed as part of the selection process.
• Basic computer literacy.
• At least 18 years of age by the programme commencement date.
• A demonstrable commitment to integrity, patient respect, confidentiality and professional discipline.
