Role Overview
This position exists to protect the interests of policyholders when an insurance company fails. The post holder oversees the entire compensation process for claimants whose insurer has been placed under statutory management or has had its operating licence revoked in line with the Insurance Act. Day-to-day work involves leading the insurance services team in assessing claims, verifying entitlement, computing payouts, and ensuring the compensation function runs smoothly within legal deadlines and regulatory constraints.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end processing of compensation claims submitted by policyholders of insurers under statutory management or licence cancellation.
- Review and authorise claim payments after confirming that documentation is valid, complete, and compliant with the Insurance Act and internal procedures.
- Supervise the calculation of compensation amounts, ensuring they reflect statutory limits, policy terms, and any approved actuarial or valuation inputs.
- Direct a team of insurance officers and assistants, assigning workloads, reviewing outputs, and maintaining quality across the claims pipeline.
- Coordinate with statutory managers, appointed administrators, auditors, and other external parties to resolve complex, disputed, or high-value claims.
- Prepare concise technical reports and position papers on claims trends, systemic issues, and compensation outcomes for senior leadership and regulatory stakeholders.
- Identify operational bottlenecks and implement process improvements aimed at reducing claim turnaround time while guarding against fraud, duplication, or overpayment.
- Contribute to policy reviews and legislative consultations relating to policyholder protection and insurance industry resolution mechanisms.
Requirements & Qualifications
- At least fifteen (15) years of cumulative, relevant work experience, with a minimum of three (3) years served at the level of Assistant Director, Insurance Services or an equivalent role in a comparable organisation.
- A Master’s degree in Commerce, Actuarial Science, Finance, Insurance, Economics, Business Administration, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised and accredited institution.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Actuarial Science, Economics, Business Administration, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university.
- Completion of a leadership or management development course lasting no less than six (6) weeks from a recognised training provider.
- Strong proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and standard office collaboration tools.
- Full compliance with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, including relevant clearance certificates.
What We Offer / Why Join
This is a senior leadership role with a five (5) year contract, renewable subject to performance and the applicable retirement age. You will have the opportunity to shape how policyholders are treated during insurer distress and to influence the wider stability of the insurance sector.
