Country LPG Operations & LMD Lead

Role Overview

This position leads the physical operations for Sun King's pay-as-you-go LPG business in Kenya, covering everything from supplier intake and bulk transport to depot management, cylinder asset tracking, shop replenishment, and last-mile delivery. The role also builds scalable last-mile delivery capabilities that serve LPG today and can expand to other product lines in the future. By weaving together supply chain, asset management, depot infrastructure, and delivery optimization, this leader directly enables reliable customer service and efficient growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage LPG sourcing and intake alongside commercial teams and suppliers, coordinate bulk transport to refilling or storage points, and keep bulk LPG moving safely and on schedule. Monitor refill turnaround, address supply bottlenecks, and reduce stock-out risk while improving transport costs and routing efficiency.
• Oversee inventory flow for LPG, cookstoves, cylinders, FMCDs, accessories, and related items from suppliers to depots and shops. Set inventory levels, define safety stock policies, and create replenishment frameworks that align with demand forecasts and sales input, balancing service continuity with working capital.
• Design standardized depot and shop layouts for cooking-related operations, establish capacity benchmarks for cylinder storage and throughput, and ensure safe storage compliance. Improve depot workflows, reduce handling time, and implement clear segregation of empty and full cylinders, including quarantine zones.
• Maintain cylinder tracking and visibility across markets, improve monthly cylinder working capital efficiency, and ensure at least 97% of repossessed assets are redeployed. Reduce asset shrinkage and idle assets, manage the recertification pipeline, and shorten the time from empty-cylinder collection to redeployment.
• Enhance last-mile delivery performance by improving rider productivity and service quality, optimizing routing and geographic density, and lowering cost per delivery. Monitor adherence to service levels, optimize fleet utilization, and improve cost-to-serve efficiency for LPG deliveries.
• Ensure operational safety and compliance: meet depot storage requirements and safety limits, enforce rider safety protocols, coordinate incident investigations, conduct depot safety audits, and maintain safe bulk LPG handling processes.
• Develop scalable last-mile delivery infrastructure that can support LPG and additional categories such as inverters, mobile phones, and solar products distributed through agent stock points. Build a scalable operating model, common routing frameworks, rider productivity standards, fleet utilization models, and cost-per-stop economics.
• Lead and develop multi-country last-mile delivery teams, create SOPs for consistent execution, coordinate recruitment and training for depot, logistics, and LMD staff, and foster a culture of operational excellence, continuous improvement, and safety. Own operational KPIs, budgets, cost-to-serve metrics, and provide regular reports and evidence-based recommendations to senior management.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, operations, business administration, finance, IT, or a related discipline.
• Experience in LPG, downstream oil and gas, or FMCG distribution.
• Strong understanding of last-mile distribution networks and a track record of scaling operations in emerging markets.
• Demonstrated project management skills, including successful delivery of process improvement initiatives.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with minimal supervision.
• Experience monitoring and evaluating how operational changes affect delivery efficiency and rider productivity.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• Experience managing cross-border teams and building team capabilities across multiple markets.
• Strong data interpretation and financial skills, with the ability to translate operational information into business decisions.
• Familiarity with regulatory bodies such as Energy Regulatory Authorities is preferred.
