Role Overview
We are looking for a detail-oriented production assistant to support a documentary photography project centred on Tatu Coffee and the surrounding Tatu City community. Over a four-month period, you will help plan shoots, coordinate logistics, manage consent processes, and act as a bridge between the photographer and local participants. This role is essential to ensuring that the production runs smoothly, stories are captured respectfully, and every shoot is well prepared from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Tatu Coffee, Tatu City, and the local community in advance of each shoot, producing concise briefs that help the photographer prepare for specific locations and subjects.
- Identify and scout potential shooting locations across the estates, including processing facilities, farms, worker settings, and community spaces, with attention to access and lighting conditions.
- Develop detailed shoot lists and story outlines in collaboration with the photographer and local partners, ensuring coverage aligns with the broader documentary narrative.
- Provide translation support as needed, working across English, Kiswahili, Kikuyu, and other relevant local languages during interviews and informal interactions.
- Manage consent and release documentation for all interviewees and participants, explaining processes clearly and maintaining organised records of signed forms and contact details.
- Assist with equipment handling, gear checklists, and daily production logistics, including call sheets, schedules, and on-location coordination.
- Serve as the local liaison between the photographer and the community, building rapport and troubleshooting any operational challenges that arise on the ground.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Prior experience as a production assistant, fixer, researcher, or coordinator on photography, film, or documentary projects.
- Strong organisational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple logistics streams simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with comfort working across different cultural contexts.
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required; working knowledge of Kikuyu is a distinct advantage.
- A solid understanding of production workflows, location releases, and standard equipment handling practices.
- Availability on short notice is essential, as shoot dates may shift or be confirmed with limited lead time.
- Highly organised, professional, resourceful, and adaptable, with sound judgement and discretion when handling sensitive information.
What We Offer / Why Join
- Competitive remuneration for the four-month assignment, reflecting the focused scope of the project.
- A valuable opportunity to build hands-on documentary production experience and expand your professional network within the creative and community development sectors.
