Consultant Pediatrician (Child Health Specialist)

Role Overview

This position places a qualified paediatric specialist at the heart of a busy outpatient child health service, where every day involves assessing young patients from newborns through adolescents. You will be responsible for translating complex clinical presentations into clear treatment plans, supporting families through difficult conversations, and ensuring that preventive care and emergency readiness are never an afterthought. Your work directly shapes child health outcomes in Kenya, aligning with national protocols and the operational standards of the facility.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform complete physical evaluations for children of all ages, tracking growth trends, developmental progress, and overall well-being against age-appropriate benchmarks.
• Diagnose and treat a broad range of acute illnesses, chronic conditions, infections, and behavioural concerns, using evidence-based approaches that reflect Kenyan paediatric protocols and the national formulary.
• Take detailed medical and family histories with sensitivity, ensuring parents and guardians feel heard while capturing essential information that shapes diagnosis and long-term care planning.
• Establish structured care pathways for children with congenital, developmental, or chronic conditions, coordinating ongoing follow-up and cross-disciplinary case management.
• Identify early warning signs of serious illness, deliver immediate stabilisation measures, and arrange timely referrals to paediatric surgeons, orthopaedic specialists, ophthalmologists, or ENT consultants as needed.
• Manage the full immunisation cycle, from cold-chain maintenance and vaccine preparation to safe administration and documentation, while also checking records to close gaps in the national schedule.
• Counsel caregivers on nutrition, breastfeeding, infection control, hygiene, lifestyle choices, medication adherence, and what to watch for after their child leaves the clinic.
• Maintain meticulous patient records in both physical and electronic systems, participate in clinical audits and quality reviews, and report notifiable diseases according to public health requirements.

Requirements & Qualifications

• MBChB or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution, followed by a Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health or a comparable specialist qualification accepted by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
• Current specialist practice licence from KMPDC, plus valid professional indemnity cover.
• At least 3–5 years of hands-on clinical experience as a paediatric specialist, ideally in a busy outpatient centre, multi-specialty clinic, or dedicated child health unit.
• Proven familiarity with electronic health records, hospital management information systems, and computerised ordering platforms in daily clinical practice.
• Strong command of paediatric drug dosing, safe prescribing practices, IMCI guidelines, immunisation standards, and child protection legislation.
• Excellent communication skills for engaging with anxious parents, young patients, and multidisciplinary teams including nursing, laboratory, nutrition, and sub-specialist colleagues.
• Demonstrated ability to stay calm under pressure, recognise paediatric red flags early, and initiate effective stabilisation and referral pathways without unnecessary delay.
