Role Overview
This is a hands-on joinery position for a carpenter who sets the quality benchmark for the whole workshop. Day to day, you will build bespoke furniture and fitted joinery from technical drawings, operate both manual and powered machinery, and take responsibility for a standard of workmanship that junior carpenters are expected to match. Your output directly influences the company’s reputation for precision, finish, and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce bespoke furniture and fitted joinery to a master-craftsman standard, working with hardwoods, softwoods, and man-made board materials.
- Read and interpret workshop drawings, cutting lists, and job specifications to plan the most efficient build sequence.
- Set up, adjust, and operate woodworking machinery such as saws, planers, routers, and sanders, while also using hand tools for precise fitting and detailing.
- Measure, mark out, cut, assemble, and install joinery either in the workshop or on site, maintaining tight tolerances and a flawless finish.
- Inspect finished work against the drawing and the project’s quality expectations, rectifying any errors before handover.
- Guide junior carpenters by demonstrating correct techniques, monitoring their output, and helping them improve their skills.
- Keep tools and machinery in good working order, and maintain a clean, safe, and organised workspace at all times.
- Coordinate with the Production Manager on job progress, material requirements, and any production challenges that arise.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in joinery, specifically within bespoke furniture and fitted joinery.
- A recognised trade certificate in carpentry or joinery, or successful completion of a grade test that proves master-craftsman-level competence.
- A proven track record of producing work that sets the standard the rest of the bench works to.
- Ability to read and understand detailed drawings and cutting lists, with a solid grasp of geometry, material yield, and assembly methods.
- Strong machine and hand-skill proficiency, including safe operation of both stationary and portable woodworking equipment.
- Experience mentoring or supervising junior carpenters or apprentices.
- Excellent attention to detail, a methodical approach, and the reliability to meet production deadlines.
