Bar Supervisor – Beverage Operations
Role Overview
This position runs the bar floor during service, working shoulder to shoulder with bartenders and bar attendants while keeping an eye on every drink that leaves the counter. You will split your attention between guests and the back-of-house essentials — stock levels, beverage costs, till accuracy and hygiene — so that the bar stays profitable without ever feeling rushed or impersonal. The employer depends on this role to hold one standard steady across every shift: the same well-made drink, the same warm welcome, whether it is a slow afternoon or a full house in the evening.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the bar team through each shift — assigning stations, setting the pace during peak hours and stepping in behind the counter when volume demands it.
- Check drinks for recipe accuracy, glassware, garnish and presentation before they reach the guest, and correct anything that falls short.
- Order, receive and count beverage stock; track usage against sales, flag variances and keep par levels aligned with expected covers.
- Prepare and monitor beverage cost figures, review wastage and shrinkage, and recommend menu or pricing adjustments where margins are slipping.
- Operate the POS system, manage cash floats, process payments and reconcile the till at the close of each shift.
- Enforce food safety, hygiene and liquor licensing rules on the floor, including responsible-service practices and age verification.
- Train, coach and appraise bar staff — running tastings, product briefings and refreshers on mixing technique and service sequence.
- Take ownership of guest complaints and difficult situations, resolving them calmly at the bar and escalating only when necessary.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Certificate or Diploma in Hospitality Management, Food & Beverage Service, or a closely related discipline.
- Advantageous: Formal training in bartending, mixology or beverage management.
- Preferred: Certification in food safety and hygiene.
- Experience: 2–5 years working in bar operations, hospitality or food & beverage service.
- Background: Prior work as a Bartender, Senior Bartender or Bar Attendant, with demonstrated responsibility for supervising staff and handling customer service directly.
- Beverage knowledge: Solid grasp of bar operations, spirits, cocktails and current mixology practice.
- Commercial skills: Confident with stock control, inventory management and beverage costing.
- Systems: Proficient with POS platforms and standard cash-handling procedures.
- Compliance: Working knowledge of health, safety and liquor licensing requirements.
- People leadership: Able to supervise, train, motivate and develop a bar team, and to monitor performance against service standards.
- Personal strengths: Strong organisation and time management, clear communication, and the composure to defuse tense guest situations professionally.
- Attitude: A genuine drive for guest satisfaction and service excellence.
