Assistant Welder

Role Overview

This position focuses on the hands-on fabrication, assembly, and repair of metal structures and equipment that keep hatchery operations running without interruption. You will spend your days cutting, shaping, fitting, and welding steel and other materials to build new components, restore damaged parts, and support maintenance crews across the facility. Your work is essential because faulty fabrication or weak welds can compromise equipment reliability, worker safety, and the strict biosecurity standards the hatchery depends on.

Key Responsibilities

• Cut, shape, and prepare metal components, then weld them using the correct technique and filler material for each job.
• Fabricate, modify, and repair machinery, equipment, pipelines, and structural components following engineering drawings and work instructions.
• Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to ensure every fabricated part matches the required dimensions and tolerances.
• Inspect completed welds and assemblies for quality, checking for defects, dimensional accuracy, and adherence to specifications.
• Perform routine maintenance and basic fault-finding on welding machines, tools, and cutting equipment to keep them working reliably.
• Assist mechanical and maintenance teams with preventive and corrective tasks that call for welding or fabrication support.
• Evaluate worn or damaged metal parts and advise on the most suitable repair or replacement action.
• Maintain a tidy, safe workshop, manage consumables and gases correctly, and comply fully with OHS, fire, environmental, and biosecurity standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A trade certificate or diploma in Welding and Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering, or a comparable technical discipline.
• A valid welding certification from a recognised body.
• At least 2 years of hands-on welding and fabrication experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Proven ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and technical plans accurately.
• Sound knowledge of welding processes, metal properties, fabrication techniques, and workshop equipment.
• Competence with hand tools, power tools, cutting equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
