Job Description
Role Overview
This position sits at the point where risk assessment meets commercial judgement: you will evaluate incoming risks, set the price and terms attached to them, and confirm that everything the organisation accepts stays within its underwriting appetite and inside the protection of its reinsurance programme. The decisions made in this seat shape how much exposure the business carries and how profitably it carries it, so precision, speed and consistency matter every working day. Alongside day-to-day case work, the role contributes to the products, processes and people that keep the underwriting function responsive to a changing market and an increasingly demanding control environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and price risks within delegated authority, verifying that each accepted case fits the underwriting guidelines and is properly covered under the reinsurance arrangement.
- Review and approve policy schedules and documents, and keep onboarding, documentation, certificates, cancellations and refunds moving within agreed turnaround times.
- Act as a technical reference point for colleagues, advising on rating and underwriting of complex or unconventional risks.
- Contribute to product development and innovation workstreams, including periodic review of existing covers, risk pricing and preparation of quotations so the portfolio keeps pace with market demand.
- Compile and submit monthly underwriting returns to the IRA, and maintain compliance risks, events, indicators and remedial actions in the risk management system.
- Audit and monitor adherence to underwriting guidelines, documentation standards, the authority matrix, data completeness, cessioning practice and filed and reinsurance rates, escalating and resolving exceptions.
- Review and refine underwriting processes, systems and standard operating procedures so they continue to fit business needs and emerging control risks.
- Spot product and process knowledge gaps, then organise and deliver training, coaching and mentoring on guidelines, procedures and technical product detail.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in insurance, actuarial science or a business-related discipline.
- Professional qualification such as ACII or IIK, or clear, verifiable progress toward one.
- At least five years of insurance experience, with deep working knowledge of underwriting practice and general insurance products.
- Technical underwriting and rating strength, paired with broad product knowledge across the general insurance portfolio.
- Analytical mindset and sound communication and customer service skills.
- Proven ability to plan and prioritise against organisational commitments, and to make sense of high-volume, occasionally contradictory information in order to reach sound decisions.
- Accountability and commercial insight — holding yourself and others to commitments, reading the market accurately, and driving results even under difficult conditions.
- Demonstrated capacity to build and develop teams, encourage new and better ways of working, and earn confidence through honesty, integrity and authenticity.
- Service orientation that balances careful risk selection with timely, helpful responses that encourage client loyalty.
