Job Description

Role Overview

This senior actuarial position sits at the heart of Kenya Re’s technical operations, where the job-holder will take ownership of the corporation’s risk analysis, product pricing, reserving and financial modelling agendas. The work matters because it directly determines how effectively the reinsurance portfolio remains profitable, solvent and sustainable for the future. On a day-to-day level, you will be producing the data that guides underwriting decisions, statutory compliance and strategic investment choices, while supervising a team that relies on your technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the development and validation of actuarial models used for pricing life and non-life reinsurance treaties, ensuring rates reflect current risk exposure and market conditions.
  • Coordinating the quarterly and annual returns submitted to the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), guaranteeing accuracy, completeness and adherence to regulatory timelines.
  • Conducting in-depth reserving exercises, including the calculation of technical provisions and analysis of claims run-off patterns, with clear recommendations for management action.
  • Presenting complex actuarial findings to executive leadership, describing how projected losses, retention levels and portfolio trends affect the corporation’s financial health.
  • Supervising and mentoring actuarial analysts, allocating work, reviewing outputs and developing the professional capacity of the team.
  • Supporting the negotiation of reinsurance contracts by providing pricing analysis, scenario testing and risk appetite assessments that strengthen Kenya Re’s commercial position.
  • Collaborating with finance and risk departments on enterprise-wide capital modelling, solvency assessment and stress-testing exercises.
  • Keeping abreast of emerging actuarial standards and regulatory developments in Kenya, adapting the corporation’s frameworks to remain compliant and competitive.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Hold a recognised actuarial qualification from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) – Kenya or UK pathway – or an equivalent credential from another reputable professional body.
  • In addition, possess strong accounting credentials, specifically Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Part II or III from KASNEB, ACCA, or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification from a credible institution.
  • Maintain active membership in good standing with a recognised actuarial association as well as the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) or an acceptable equivalent.
  • Have completed a formal management training course lasting no fewer than four weeks at a recognised institution.
  • Bring at least twelve (12) years of relevant professional experience in an actuarial or quantitative role, including no fewer than three (3) years at a supervisory level within a reputable organisation.
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience in preparing IRA quarterly and annual returns, with intimate knowledge of the data structures and validation rules involved.
  • Exhibit proven merit and managerial capability, backed by a work record that reflects consistently strong performance, reliable delivery and sound professional judgement.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build effective working relationships with internal departments, external suppliers and regulatory bodies.
  • Show strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a meticulous approach to detail and a focus on value for money in all technical recommendations.
  • Display superior planning, organising and time-management capacities, remaining effective under pressure while meeting strict submission deadlines.
  • Fulfil all requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, including integrity, leadership and good character standards.
