Job Description

Role Overview

You will be part of a field engineering team responsible for keeping fibre optic networks operational across Nairobi and surrounding sites. Your day-to-day work involves supporting senior technicians with cable installation, splicing, testing, and fault restoration, while also liaising with the network operations centre to resolve service disruptions quickly. This role matters because reliable fibre connectivity depends on careful hands-on work, accurate testing, and prompt responses to network faults.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lead technicians with fibre optic cable installation, routine maintenance, and restoration of service after outages.
  • Prepare and splice fibre optic cables at distribution hubs and customer premises, ensuring clean, low-loss connections.
  • Test and troubleshoot fibre links using light sources, optical power meters, and OTDR equipment to verify performance and locate faults.
  • Install, terminate, and secure fibre optic cables and related network hardware in accordance with project specifications.
  • Diagnose and resolve fibre network faults within agreed service level agreements, escalating complex issues when necessary.
  • Follow health and safety guidelines and quality assurance procedures during all site activities, from initial implementation through ongoing maintenance.
  • Work closely with assistant technicians and NOC personnel, submitting job completion reports and providing timely status updates on fault resolution.
  • Support customers by explaining basic troubleshooting steps and answering fibre optic related questions to ensure a positive service experience.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Certificate or Diploma in Telecommunications, Fibre Optics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience in a similar role involving fibre optic networks or telecommunications equipment.
  • Solid understanding of fibre network concepts, including cable types, splicing techniques, and signal transmission principles.
  • Practical proficiency in fibre handling, preparation, splicing, and maintenance tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use technical tools and test instruments accurately.
  • Willingness to work on-site in Nairobi and travel to different locations as required for field duties.
