Job Description

Role Overview

The Assistant Claims Manager reports to the Claims Manager and helps set the pace for how the claims function performs day to day — planning, coordinating and raising the standard of claims handling across the department. The position carries ownership of timely and accurate settlements, sound reserving, accountable service providers, and a trained, disciplined team. Because claims outcomes directly affect both the company's bottom line and its standing with policyholders, this role is central to keeping the department efficient, compliant and within policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run the daily claims operation — receiving, evaluating and settling claims quickly and accurately, reviewing claim forms and supporting documents as they come in and rejecting or querying anything that does not stack up.
  • Verify that every claim falls within the scope of its policy, scrutinising coverage, exclusions and limits before sign-off so that payments are only made where they are due.
  • Set and regularly revisit service level benchmarks, holding the department to standards consistent with accepted industry practice and reviewing performance against them.
  • Keep reserves across all claims at an adequate level, monitor how they are being utilised, and initiate remedial action whenever trends call for it.
  • Select, appoint and manage external service providers, reviewing their performance and ensuring that negotiated service level agreements — including those you help prepare — are honoured.
  • Review and process non-motor claims, pursue optimal third-party recoveries, and facilitate salvage disposal through e-bidding.
  • Produce weekly claims statistics, periodic claims and management reports, and the monthly regulatory submission, escalating adverse claims and anomalies to underwriters so that risk selection keeps improving.
  • Spot and shut down fraudulent claims and the loopholes that allow them, act as the claims department's data protection champion, and represent the department in dispute resolution forums.
  • Supervise, appraise, coach and recruit claims staff, oversee continuous training for performance and career growth, and maintain discipline within the team.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least seven years working within a claims department, two of which must have been spent in a comparable senior or supervisory role.
  • A bachelor's degree in business, insurance or an equivalent discipline from a recognised institution.
  • A Diploma in Insurance, and either AIIK or CII qualification.
  • Keen attention to detail, with strong organisational and analytical abilities and a genuine knack for detecting fraud.
  • A track record of integrity and professional competence that shows up in your results and the way you work.
  • Confident communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Collaborative by nature, comfortable working as part of a team, with demonstrated leadership ability.
