Role Overview
This position sits within the finance team of a Kenyan community development foundation, where you will be responsible for keeping the organisation’s financial operations accurate, compliant, and timely. Day to day, you will process payments, reconcile accounts, manage records for commercial properties and the endowment fund, and prepare financial reports for funders and auditors. Your work directly enables the foundation to responsibly manage donor funds, support grantees, and maintain the trust of partners and regulators.
Key Responsibilities
- Process financial transactions and maintain the general ledger, fixed asset registers, depreciation schedules, and property accounting records in line with IFRS and internal policies.
- Monitor rental income, tenant deposits, arrears, and property expenses, liaising with property managers to keep reporting accurate and tax-compliant.
- Maintain endowment fund records, including ownership registers, contribution schedules, investment income, payouts, and approved drawdowns, while reconciling with administrators and custodians.
- Validate payment requests against approved budgets, organisational policies, and donor guidelines, ensuring every expenditure is eligible and properly documented.
- Manage petty cash within set limits, perform regular bank and ledger reconciliations, and support month-end closing procedures.
- Prepare comprehensive financial reports for funders, review grantee financial reports for compliance, and provide training and guidance on financial best practices to grantees.
- Participate in budget development for projects and grants, and conduct site visits to grant-funded projects to verify compliance, assess progress, and offer on-site support.
- Assist with internal and external audits, including documentation and data collection, and archive financial documents according to the organisation’s retention policy.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA (K) certification is required.
- At least five years of relevant experience in a similar finance or accounting role.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and practices, including IFRS.
- Hands-on experience with accounting software; familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics 365 is preferred.
- Understanding of regulatory and donor-specific reporting requirements, as well as grant accounting and compliance.
- Proven ability to create, analyse, and monitor budgets, and to manage statutory returns and tax payments.
- Experience with internal and external auditing processes and financial data analysis.
- Strong communication skills to explain financial concepts to non-finance colleagues and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- High ethical standards, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
