Role Overview
We are seeking a highly analytical, independent, and ethically anchored Internal Audit Manager to direct our risk-based evaluation and governance mechanisms. Your primary objective is to deliver independent, objective assurance and corporate advisory services designed to insulate member capital, improve internal controls, and maximize operational efficiency. This executive position bridges regulatory oversight with deep tactical investigations; you will steer the auditing function from annual planning and cyber-infrastructure checks through to direct forensic probes and board-level reporting. The role demands an objective financial expert who holds an unyielding understanding of SACCO frameworks and can authoritatively safeguard institutional integrity.
Areas of Accountability
Risk Architecture & Audit Execution
-
Formulate and execute comprehensive annual risk-based audit models covering all SACCO divisions, product portfolios, and third-party investment streams.
-
Orchestrate deep operational audits across credit lines, loan portfolios, recovery pipelines, liquidity reserves, and corporate payroll sheets.
-
Deploy unannounced spot checks and surprise field audits to verify cash positions, physical assets, and inventory balances.
-
Evaluate the core architecture and processing integrity of financial data, management info systems, and corporate accounting databases.
Governance, Risk Management & Compliance
-
Review institutional alignment with the Sacco Societies Act, SASRA regulations, Co-operative Societies Act, and global IIA criteria.
-
Assess operational compliance regarding Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter Financing of Terrorism (CFT), Data Protection, and local tax statutes.
-
Analyze the efficacy of existing enterprise risk management (ERM) policies, tracking the execution velocity of board resolutions.
-
Audit tech infrastructure dependencies, investigating cybersecurity layers, business continuity plans, and disaster recovery setups.
Reporting, Strategic Advisory & Follow-Ups
-
Package highly scannable, data-driven audit logs containing precise vulnerability findings, risk scoring, and management action plans.
-
Present formal quarterly audit updates directly to executive committees, the Supervisory Committee, and the Board of Directors.
-
Establish a rigorous follow-up framework to trace, verify, and document the implementation status of agreed-upon internal controls.
-
Offer objective advisory guidance to leadership regarding structural workflow adjustments, operational friction points, and risk exposure points.
Fraud Containment & Team Supervision
-
Lead discrete forensic investigations into suspected fiscal fraud, unethical employee choices, corporate rule breaches, and compliance breakdowns.
-
Formulate robust corrective blueprints to close active system gaps and coordinate specialized whistleblowing response programs.
-
Provide direct mentorship, structural work allocation, and technical skills training to junior internal auditors and audit assistants.
-
Design and manage the internal department budget while championing an absolute culture of accountability and compliance.
Skills & Experience Required
Minimum Entry Criteria
-
Academic Foundation: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, Commerce, Business Administration, or a closely related commercial discipline.
-
Professional Credentials: Mandatory certification as a CPA(K), CIA, or ACCA. Active professional membership in good standing with ICPAK or IIA Kenya is required. (CISA, CRISC, CISM, or CISSP status is a definitive technical asset).
-
Sector Longevity: Minimum of 7 years of progressive internal audit experience within the regulated financial space (SACCOs, commercial banking, microfinance, or insurance), with at least 3 years explicitly served at a supervisory or managerial tier.
-
Technical Mastery: Proven execution capability across risk-based audit methods, ICT systems auditing, regulatory compliance structures, and active fraud investigations.
Leadership Competencies
-
Absolute Independence: Complete moral objectivity with the capacity to remain independent of daily operations while executing firm corporate reviews.
-
Analytical Precision: Outstanding problem-solving agility with intense attention to structural detail and financial anomalies.
-
