What’s Happening with Tesla Powerwall 2 Batteries?
Tesla is recalling over 10,000 Powerwall 2 batteries after discovering a “third-party battery cell defect” that could cause overheating, smoke, or even fire. The recall affects units sold between November 2020 and December 2022 in the US. Tesla has already remotely discharged most affected units, making them safe until a full replacement is completed.
Which Powerwall 2 Batteries Are Affected?
The recall includes about 10,500 Powerwall 2 units purchased through Tesla’s website or installed by certified Tesla installers. Owners can identify affected units by the Powerwall 2 branding printed on the side. Tesla is proactively ensuring all remaining units are safely discharged before replacement.
How Dangerous Is the Defect?
While the defect can lead to overheating and minor property damage, Tesla reports no injuries so far. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) has logged 22 reports of overheating, six reports of smoke, and five incidents of minor property damage. Prompt action and remote discharging have significantly reduced risks to homeowners.
What Should Tesla Powerwall 2 Owners Do?
Owners should check their units and follow Tesla’s instructions for verification and replacement. Most affected batteries are already safe due to remote discharging, but Tesla technicians will handle any remaining units. Replacement is free, ensuring peace of mind for all customers.
