Samsung SmartThings update lets you automate routines with natural language
Samsung's SmartThings platform just got a major upgrade—and it's now smarter and more intuitive than ever. With the latest update, you can automate your smart home using natural language. That means instead of navigating through menus or configuring each device manually, you can now just type (or say) what you want—like “turn off all lights when I leave home”—and SmartThings will take care of the rest. This update puts Samsung ahead of Google and Amazon, whose own natural language features are still in early testing.
Natural Language Automation Comes to SmartThings
The standout feature in this update is the Routine Creation Assistant, which allows users to create smart home routines using simple, natural sentences. Available now for users in the U.S. and South Korea on both iOS and Android, this AI-powered feature removes the technical barriers that often make smart home automation feel overwhelming. Whether you're setting up a “Good Morning” routine or telling SmartThings to lock your doors and turn off your lights at bedtime, everything can be done in just a few words.
SmartThings Routines Now Include Delays and Confirmations
Samsung has also added Delay Actions and Confirm to Run Actions to make routines more flexible and secure. Want your coffee maker to start 15 minutes after the lights come on? Done. Need a confirmation before your security system activates when someone leaves the house? You’ve got it. These small but smart improvements make SmartThings more useful in real-world situations—especially in shared households where accidental automation could be a problem.
SmartThings Expands to Apple Watch and More Devices
Controlling your smart home just got easier with the new SmartThings Apple Watch widget, which lets users trigger routines and control devices directly from their wrist. You can also now explore smart home capabilities without owning any smart devices thanks to the Virtual Home feature, and setting up new Samsung devices is now faster in 58 countries through the expanded Calm Onboarding program. This includes Galaxy Watches, Buds, TVs, and home appliances—making it simpler than ever to start or expand your smart home setup.
