Keeping your messages and media safe has always been a priority for Signal users, and now the platform is taking that a step further. Signal’s first paid feature introduces encrypted backups, giving users a secure way to store their chat history and media without compromising privacy. For just $1.99 per month, subscribers can back up older media files beyond 45 days while still enjoying free encrypted text message backups.
The encrypted backup feature ensures that your data is protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning no one but you can access your files. Paid subscribers can save unlimited encrypted backups of media, while free users can store the last 45 days of media and up to 100MB of text messages. This makes Signal’s encrypted backups accessible to both casual and heavy users who value data protection.
Unlike other platforms that rely on advertising or data monetization, Signal remains committed to user privacy. Offering encrypted backups as a paid feature helps the service cover storage and transfer costs while staying true to its nonprofit mission. By introducing this option, Signal continues to provide secure communication tools without ever compromising on its promise of no data tracking or ad-based revenue.
The feature is already available in Signal’s Android beta app, with broader rollout plans for iOS and desktop users in the near future. Daily automatic encrypted backups ensure that conversations remain secure, and users retain full control through a unique recovery key. Signal also plans to expand functionality, eventually allowing encrypted backups to be saved to locations chosen by the user.
