Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Surge Past Original in Record-Breaking Launch
Nintendo Switch 2 has shattered records, selling 5.82 million units in its first month—more than double the original Switch’s debut. Gamers worldwide are rushing to get their hands on the next-gen console, which is now the fastest-selling gaming system in history. Demand has exceeded supply in many regions, with preorders selling out and limited stock available at launch.
Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Break Records
According to Nintendo’s Q1 earnings report, the Switch 2 has already surpassed the 2.7 million units sold by the original Switch in its first month. This overwhelming demand has pushed Nintendo’s revenue to ¥572.3 billion (around $3.8 billion), a 132% increase compared to last year. Nintendo aims to sell 15 million units by the end of its 2026 fiscal year, although it faces challenges from upcoming U.S. tariffs.
Nintendo Switch 2 Faces Supply and Tariff Challenges
The console’s massive popularity has led to shortages, and Nintendo is working to boost production. Complicating matters, the U.S. recently announced a 20% tariff on goods from Vietnam—where Switch 2 consoles are produced—doubling the 10% tariff set in April. Despite this, Nintendo has stated the tariffs will not significantly impact its earnings forecast for the current year.
Switch 2 Success Drives Nintendo’s Legacy Forward
The Switch 2 launch not only cements Nintendo’s dominance in gaming but also boosts sales of the original Switch, now at 153.1 million lifetime units. It is on track to surpass the Nintendo DS, which holds the company’s all-time record with 154.02 million units sold. Meanwhile, the Wii U lags far behind at 13.7 million units, highlighting the monumental success of the Switch lineup.
