Hue Smart Button Gets a Bigger Redesign — But Is It Worth the Higher Price?
Philips Hue has unveiled a new version of its Hue smart button, featuring a larger design and a noticeable price increase in the U.S. If you're wondering what’s new or whether it’s worth the upgrade, here's a quick breakdown: while the button offers the same smart lighting controls as before — like dimming, brightness adjustments, and scene cycling — the only real differences are its size and price tag. For U.S. users, the cost jumps from $29.99 to $32.99, while EU and UK prices remain significantly lower.
A Familiar Hue Smart Button, Just Bigger
The new Hue smart button now measures 45mm in diameter, up from the previous 32mm. The flatter, more angular redesign might appeal to users seeking better ergonomics, and the updated mounting system now uses a magnetic metal plate rather than a full wall plate. It still requires a Hue Bridge and connects via Zigbee, supporting integrations through Matter-compatible platforms like Apple Home. Despite the new look, functionality stays the same, allowing you to trigger lighting scenes, dim lights, or set automations with a press or hold.
Same Smart Lighting Features, Higher U.S. Pricing
Unfortunately for U.S. buyers, the button now costs more than it did at launch — and more than it does elsewhere. At $32.99, it's pricier than the £19.99 (UK) and €21.99 (EU) versions. The feature set remains unchanged from the previous model, which means you're paying more for a slightly bigger form factor and easier battery replacement. The same CR2032 coin battery is still used, now easier to access and replace, and still rated to last about two years.
Why Hue’s Price Increase Might Be a Sign of What’s Coming
Some speculate that the rising U.S. prices are linked to international tariffs, especially following a promotional email from Hue hinting at price hikes effective July 1. This could make Hue — already a premium smart lighting brand — even less budget-friendly for American users. While the larger button may improve usability, many fans of the original may find the added cost harder to justify without any major new features.
