Google Pics App Fixes AI Image Editing with Comment-Based Tweaks
Wed at 8:39 AM -
Google Pics: A New Approach to AI Image Editing
Google has launched a new AI image generation app called Pics, designed to streamline the tedious process of iterating on AI-generated images. Instead of rewriting an entire prompt to change one small detail, users can simply click on the area they want to modify and leave a comment — much like suggesting edits in a Google Doc.
How Pics Works
Pics is powered by a combination of Gemini and Google's Nano Banana 2 image model. In a demo, a Google employee working on a birthday party invite clicked on a cat image, and a pop-up appeared where she typed a note to change it to a dog. She also clicked on the address text on the card to edit it directly. After a moment, the image updated — though the new "dog" still looked somewhat like a cat.
Key Features of Pics
- Click-to-edit interface: Select any part of an image to change it.
- Comment-based editing: Leave a note describing the desired change.
- Powered by Gemini: Leverages Google's advanced AI for accurate edits.
Rollout and Availability
Pics is initially launching as a standalone web app. Google is first rolling it out to trusted testers, with a broader release planned for later this summer. Subscribers to Google's AI Ultra plan will get early access.
Future Integration with Google Workspace
Google plans to eventually integrate Pics directly into other Workspace apps, such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This will allow users to create and edit images without leaving the app they're working in, making AI image editing more seamless and accessible.
Why Pics Matters for AI Image Editing
Traditional AI image editing often requires users to write detailed prompts for every small change. Pics simplifies this by letting users focus on specific areas, reducing the time and effort needed to perfect an image. This innovation could make AI image editing more intuitive for both casual users and professionals.
Comparison with Other AI Tools
Unlike other AI image editors that require full prompt rewrites, Pics uses a comment-based system that feels familiar to anyone who has used collaborative editing tools. This lowers the learning curve and speeds up workflows.
