Google is taking a bold step toward sustainable AI energy. The tech giant has struck a 25-year deal with NextEra Energy to help restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa — a nuclear power plant that shut down in 2020. This revival marks a significant shift as Big Tech companies look to secure carbon-free, around-the-clock power for their ever-growing AI data centers.
The plant, capable of generating 615 megawatts, will supply electricity primarily to Google, while the Central Iowa Power Cooperative will purchase any remaining output. This partnership signals a turning point in how Big Tech invests in nuclear infrastructure to meet soaring AI energy demands.
The Duane Arnold project is part of a larger trend among tech companies reviving nuclear energy to power their operations sustainably. With AI workloads driving electricity consumption to record highs, nuclear energy offers reliability that wind and solar can’t always guarantee.
Microsoft, for example, has also shown interest in bringing a shuttered reactor at Three Mile Island back online by 2028. Together, these initiatives are transforming the once-declining nuclear sector into a pillar of clean, digital-age energy.
While the vision is ambitious, the reality is complex. The U.S. has never restarted a decommissioned nuclear plant before, making this effort both historic and risky. Regulatory hurdles, safety protocols, and modernization requirements could slow progress.
Still, with Google backing the investment, there’s optimism that the Duane Arnold Energy Center could be operational again by 2029 — setting a precedent for future tech-powered nuclear revivals.
This partnership underscores how AI and clean energy are now deeply connected. As data centers demand more power, Big Tech’s embrace of nuclear energy could reshape the entire grid. Beyond Iowa, similar projects could accelerate across the U.S., turning idle reactors into engines of sustainable innovation.
By breathing new life into shuttered nuclear plants, companies like Google are not just powering AI — they’re rewriting the future of energy.
