Job Description

Role Overview

As a Commercial Vehicle Welder, you will build and join structural parts for trucks, buses, trailers, and specialist utility vehicles, including chassis extensions, sub-frames, safety cages, and body panels. Your work will turn engineering drawings into accurately fitted, dependable assemblies that meet demanding structural and dimensional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cut, form, position, and join steel, aluminium, and stainless-steel components to match drawings and work orders.
  • Use MIG/MAG and TIG processes on vehicle structures and sheet metal, managing heat input to limit distortion.
  • Prepare parts for welding by cleaning and beveling edges, then clamping, aligning, and tack-welding assemblies.
  • Operate fabrication tools and machinery such as grinders, plasma cutters, drill presses, and guillotine shears.
  • Check finished welds for soundness, consistent appearance, and signs of defects including cracks, porosity, or burn-through.
  • Maintain welding equipment through routine checks and basic upkeep, and report issues that may affect safe or reliable operation.
  • Follow workshop safety procedures, wear required protective equipment, and keep the work area safe and orderly.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Two to five or more years of hands-on welding and metal fabrication experience, ideally in commercial vehicle body building, heavy machinery, or structural steel.
  • Trade certificate or test qualification (Grade I, II, or III), or a diploma in welding and fabrication, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong practical ability in MIG/MAG and TIG welding across different metals and material thicknesses.
  • Confident reading engineering drawings, CAD plans, and fabrication schematics.
  • Accurate measuring skills and a good understanding of fit, alignment, and spatial relationships.
  • AWS structural welding certification, such as D1.1 for steel or D1.2 for aluminium, or an equivalent credential, is an advantage.
