Role Overview
This position places a qualified trainer at the front of a technical and vocational classroom, workshop or simulated work environment, where the day-to-day focus is on helping learners master practical, industry-relevant competencies. The trainer plans and delivers competency-based instruction, assesses learner progress against recognised standards, and ensures that training equipment and materials are used safely and effectively. The role matters because it directly shapes the quality of graduates entering the workforce: well-trained learners leave with verifiable skills that employers can rely on, and the institution builds a reputation for credible, standards-driven vocational education.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare and deliver competency-based training sessions in the assigned area of specialisation, aligning lesson content with approved curricula, occupational standards and assessment guidelines.
- Supervise learners during practical activities in workshops, laboratories or simulated work settings, enforcing safety procedures and correct use of tools, equipment and materials.
- Design and administer formative and summative assessments, including practical tasks, projects and written tests, and maintain accurate records of learner achievement.
- Prepare schemes of work, session plans, learning resources and assessment tools that reflect current industry practice in the specialised trade or discipline.
- Provide individualised support, coaching and feedback to trainees, including those who need remedial help or additional practical exposure.
- Maintain training facilities, tools, consumables and learner portfolios, and report equipment faults, replenishment needs or safety hazards promptly.
- Participate in internal quality assurance, moderation, verification and curriculum review activities, and cooperate with external assessment and accreditation bodies as required.
- Keep professional and technical knowledge current through continuous professional development, industry attachment or engagement with sector stakeholders.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications in the area of specialisation being taught.
- A valid TVETA Trainer Registration and Licence covering the relevant area of specialisation, maintained in good standing throughout the period of engagement.
- Demonstrated practical competence and hands-on experience in the trade, technical field or discipline in which training will be delivered.
- Ability to translate occupational standards into structured, learner-centred training and assessment activities.
- Strong planning, record-keeping and reporting skills, including the ability to document learner progress accurately and on time.
- Clear communication and presentation skills, with the capacity to instruct groups and guide individuals of varying ability levels.
- Commitment to workplace safety, professional ethics and the principles of competency-based education and training.
- Willingness to continue professional development and to work within the quality assurance framework of the training institution.
