Role Overview
This position centres on delivering hands-on technical training that equips trainees with the practical competences employers actually need. Working within a competency-based education and training (CBET) framework, the trainer plans and runs both classroom and workshop sessions, assesses learner competence against national standards, and helps candidates progress toward trade certification and employment. The post is central to maintaining the quality and credibility of the institution's training programmes before regulators, industry partners and the trainees themselves.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare schemes of work, session plans, lesson notes and learning materials aligned to the approved CBET curriculum for the assigned trade area.
- Deliver theory and practical instruction to trainees, demonstrating correct techniques and supervising hands-on work in workshops, laboratories or simulated work environments.
- Design and administer formative and summative assessments, including practical assignments, portfolios of evidence and trade test preparation, then record and report learner achievement.
- Enforce workshop safety rules, correct use of personal protective equipment, and safe handling of tools, machines and materials at all times.
- Maintain accurate training records covering attendance, assessment results, trainee progress and consumable/tool inventory.
- Guide trainees on industrial attachment, workplace ethics, career pathways and preparation for professional certification.
- Take part in internal quality assurance, curriculum review and inspection or accreditation exercises conducted by TVETA and other relevant bodies.
- Keep trade skills and industry knowledge current through attachment, further training and continued professional development.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications in the area of specialisation, obtained from a recognised institution.
- A valid TVETA Trainer Registration/Licence in the relevant area of specialisation — this is a mandatory minimum requirement.
- Demonstrated technical competence and practical experience in the trade or discipline being taught.
- Working knowledge of competency-based training and assessment principles, including the development of assessment tools and portfolios of evidence.
- Familiarity with workshop and laboratory safety practices applicable to the trade.
- Sound record-keeping, planning and organisational skills, with basic ICT competence for documentation and reporting.
- Strong communication and instructional skills, with the ability to work constructively with trainees, colleagues and industry partners.
