Role Overview
This position places a licensed technical trainer at the centre of competency-based delivery, turning approved curricula into practical, workshop-based learning that equips trainees with skills employers actually need. Day to day, the trainer plans and facilitates theory and hands-on sessions, supervises workshop practice, and assesses learners against defined competency standards so that graduates leave with verifiable, job-ready skills. The role matters because the quality, safety, and credibility of every certificate issued rests on the trainer's professional registration, technical currency, and ability to keep instruction aligned with industry practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver competency-based lessons in the assigned area of specialisation, balancing classroom theory with supervised practical and workshop activities.
- Develop and maintain schemes of work, session plans, learning materials, and assessment tools that match the approved curriculum and national competency standards.
- Conduct formative and summative assessments, mark practical and written work, and keep accurate, auditable records of learner progress and achievement.
- Supervise learners in workshops, laboratories, or simulated work environments, enforcing safety procedures, correct tool and equipment use, and proper handling of materials.
- Manage training resources including tools, machines, consumables, and instructional aids, reporting faults and requesting replenishment to keep sessions running without disruption.
- Mentor and coach trainees, including those on attachment or industrial placement, guiding them on professional conduct, teamwork, and workplace expectations.
- Maintain and update your own technical and pedagogical competence through industry exposure, refresher training, and continued compliance with registration requirements.
- Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum review, internal verification, examination administration, and quality assurance activities, and liaise with industry partners on attachment and skills-gap feedback.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A relevant academic qualification (diploma or degree, as applicable to the level of training) and/or professional qualification in the area of specialisation.
- A valid TVETA Trainer Registration/Licence for the relevant area of specialisation — this is a mandatory minimum requirement and must be current at the time of engagement and maintained throughout.
- Demonstrable technical competence and practical, hands-on command of the subject being taught, supported by relevant industry or workshop experience.
- Working knowledge of competency-based education and training (CBET) principles, including trainee-centred facilitation and competency-based assessment.
- Ability to design schemes of work, session plans, and assessment instruments, and to keep documentation organised and audit-ready.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the patience and clarity needed to instruct learners at different levels of prior knowledge.
- Commitment to workshop safety, learner safeguarding, and professional ethics in a training environment.
- Willingness to keep skills current as tools, technologies, and industry standards evolve.
