It is a Public University that focuses exclusively on Technology. It is the successor of Kimathi University College of Technology (KUCT), a constituent college if Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), that was established in 2007. The University offers a wide range of programmes both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in various Schools and Institutes. These include:Computer Science and Information Technology, Engineering, Applied Sciences, Food Science and Technology, Health Science, Business Management and Economics, Geothermal Energy Technology, Geomatics, Geospatial Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Tourism and Hospitality and Technical and Professional Studies. The University also offers diploma and Certificate courses for mid-level technical skills. The programmes offered by the University are approved by the Senate and the various designated bodies like Engineers Board of Kenya (CBK) and Commission for University Education (CUE) that was established by the government of Kenya through the Commission for University Education Act, 2010. DeKUT recognises research as a pillar of both institutional and national development and its strategic focus is to provide technological education and create unique structures for research,innovations, extension and technology transfer. Thus, Research and Innovation, Linkages and Technology transfer are key result areas in the University’s Strategic plan for 2014-2019. DeKUT is already implementing an ambitious physical facilities development programme to support the realization of her Vision and Mission. The University has in place a magnificent Resource Centre,which is a multi-purpose facility whose two phases are complete now. It comprises of Lecture theatres, a Library, Laboratories and offices for both administrative and academic staff. In line with her vision of being a Premier Technological University excelling in Quality Education, Research and Technology transfer, DeKUT has put up expansive and well equipped Engineering workshops and supporting Physics and Chemistry laboratories. DeKUT intends to establish a Science and Technology Park as per the Ministry of Education’s Master Plan for Science and Technology Parks in Kenya, the second of the kind will be established at Konza City. Job Description

Role Overview

This is an academic development position within a university engineering department, designed for a promising scholar who is actively pursuing doctoral studies in power systems. The post blends structured teaching support, laboratory facilitation, and collaborative research, allowing the successful candidate to grow into a full-time academic while contributing meaningfully to the department’s teaching load and research output. Day-to-day work involves preparing and delivering tutorials, guiding students in practical sessions, supporting laboratory demonstrations, and engaging with ongoing research themes in power engineering that inform the department’s academic agenda.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions for undergraduate courses in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, with particular attention to power systems, power electronics, and related energy conversion topics.
  • Assist in developing and updating laboratory manuals, practical exercises, and teaching materials, ensuring experiments align with current engineering practice and safety standards.
  • Support the supervision of undergraduate projects and design work, advising students on technical approaches, simulation tools, and practical implementation.
  • Participate in departmental research activities, including the preparation of research proposals, data collection, analysis, and authorship of scholarly publications.
  • Contribute to departmental academic duties such as invigilation, student assessment, marking, and academic counselling.
  • Collaborate with senior faculty to secure research funding, industry partnerships, and opportunities for knowledge transfer in the field of power systems.
  • Present research findings at departmental seminars, university conferences, and other relevant academic or professional forums.
  • Engage in continuous professional development aligned with the doctoral research programme and the requirements of the relevant professional engineering body.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering with a clear specialisation in power systems, or an equivalent qualification recognised by a reputable university, with strong academic standing at both levels.
  • Registered for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or an equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant area of electrical engineering, with a research focus that fits the department’s strengths in power systems.
  • Be registered with, or meet the eligibility requirements for registration with, the relevant professional engineering body in Kenya or an equivalent recognised international body.
  • Demonstrable potential to contribute to teaching, practical laboratory instruction, research, innovation, and other academic activities of the department, supported by academic transcripts, publications, or relevant experience.
