Job Description

Role Overview

You will be the hands-on operator ensuring the facility's boiler systems run safely and efficiently to deliver the steam and hot water essential for production. Day-to-day work involves monitoring system parameters, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting faults, and coordinating with production teams to keep operations flowing without unplanned downtime. Your attention to detail directly supports food safety compliance and energy cost management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Start up, operate, and shut down boilers following standard procedures to maintain consistent steam pressure and hot water supply.
  • Continuously monitor gauges, sensors, and control panels, adjusting settings to optimise performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Conduct routine inspections of burners, pumps, valves, and safety devices, identifying wear or potential failures early.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical or electrical issues on boiler equipment, including cleaning, replacing parts, and recalibrating controls.
  • Perform mandatory safety tests (e.g., low-water cutoff, pressure-relief valves) and log results to meet regulatory and plant standards.
  • Maintain detailed shift logs covering operations, maintenance actions, fuel usage, and any incidents or corrective measures taken.
  • Track fuel inventory and reorder consumables such as chemicals, lubricants, and filters to avoid shortages.
  • Collaborate with production, maintenance, and quality assurance teams to align boiler output with processing demands and shutdown schedules.
  • Follow all Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) requirements, including proper handling of hot surfaces, pressurised systems, and hazardous materials.
  • Identify and propose improvements to reduce energy consumption, such as adjusting firing rates, optimising blowdown schedules, or recovering waste heat.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum of a certificate in Boiler Operation, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering from a recognised institution.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience operating industrial boilers in a manufacturing, processing, or similar environment.
  • Valid NITA certification (or equivalent local boiler operator license) is required.
  • Practical knowledge of boiler controls, combustion principles, water treatment, and safety interlocks.
  • Ability to read technical diagrams, pressure/temperature charts, and maintenance manuals.
  • Comfortable working rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, in a hot and noisy plant environment.
  • Strong attention to detail for precise record-keeping and adherence to safety protocols.
