Role Overview
You will lead the compliance function at a biochar production facility, taking ownership of two connected areas: the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) programme and the facility's Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) programme. Day to day, you will design the data systems that track feedstock, production, quality, and end-use, then make sure every shift records data accurately enough to satisfy external carbon verifiers. You will also build the facility's safety programme, train staff across production, quality, and field teams, and act as the main point of contact for regulators, auditors, and certification bodies. Reporting to the Biochar Lead, this role is central to keeping the facility credible, compliant, and audit-ready at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and maintain the facility's HSE programme, including risk registers, emergency response plans, safety procedures, and site safety infrastructure such as PPE and signage.
- Develop and deliver HSE training for all staff through inductions, toolbox talks, and emergency drills, while equipping shift supervisors with the tools they need to enforce safety on the floor.
- Build and run the MRV data system covering feedstock inputs, production outputs, quality measurements, and carbon removal calculations, ensuring all data is traceable to the relevant carbon standards.
- Support Lab and Quality Technicians with data recording processes so that every shift produces accurate, consistent, verification-ready records.
- Create and maintain MRV dashboards, reporting templates, and data management processes, and keep up to date with evolving carbon methodologies and biochar sector best practices.
- Act as the primary interface with external verifiers, auditors, and regulators during audit and certification cycles, including preparing documents, coordinating site walkthroughs, and submitting monthly and quarterly reports.
- Own corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) raised by auditors, driving them to closure and keeping all documentation audit-ready across MRV, HSE, and environmental compliance.
- Train field staff on correct biochar application methods and point-of-delivery data collection, including delivering refresher training before each season.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Data Science, Agronomy, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of experience in HSE, compliance, audit, or environmental data management roles.
- Strong working knowledge of HSE practices, OSHA (Kenya, 2007), ISO standards, or comparable regulatory frameworks.
- Comfort engaging directly with third-party auditors and external verifiers, and experience designing programmes that stand up to external scrutiny.
- Familiarity with carbon standards such as Isometric, Puro.earth, EBC, or IBI is an advantage, though not required; the right candidate will build this expertise on the job with support from Tupande's carbon partners.
- Solid data management, reporting, and analytical skills, including experience with spreadsheets, data platforms, or environmental monitoring software.
- High attention to detail and a strong commitment to data integrity, traceability, and safety discipline.
- Willingness to learn across both MRV and HSE domains, translating a strong compliance foundation into both areas.
- Fluent in English; experience working in an East African context is an advantage.
