Transport Supervisor

Role Overview

This hands-on supervisor coordinates the movement of cargo between ports and delivery destinations, balancing vehicle schedules, driver assignments and port requirements throughout the day. By keeping people, paperwork and vehicles moving in step, the role helps reduce delays and avoidable costs while maintaining safe, dependable service for customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan vehicle dispatches, routes, loading and offloading, and driver assignments to meet collection and delivery schedules.
• Coordinate container haulage, cargo collection and delivery, working with port authorities, clearing agents, shipping lines, depots and customers to support timely release and movement.
• Monitor vehicle and container locations, cargo status, turnaround times, fuel use, vehicle utilization and operating costs; escalate emerging issues promptly.
• Resolve day-to-day disruptions such as port congestion, release delays and documentation errors, and limit exposure to detention and demurrage costs.
• Check that transport and cargo records are accurate and that vehicles meet roadworthiness, safety, port-access and company procedure requirements.
• Supervise drivers, port clerks and other operations staff, reinforcing dispatch instructions, schedules, safe working practices and company policies.
• Coach team members, review productivity and service delivery, address performance concerns, and ensure accidents, incidents or cargo discrepancies are reported.
• Carry out other operational responsibilities assigned by the Operations Manager.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Transport Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Clearing and Forwarding, Business Management or a related discipline.
• Three to five years of relevant experience in transport, fleet or logistics operations, including at least two years in a supervisory or team-lead capacity.
• Practical port-transport experience is essential, including coordinating container movements, cargo collection and delivery, drivers, port clerks and transport paperwork.
• Sound understanding of cargo release procedures, port access requirements, container movements, and the causes and costs of port delays, detention and demurrage.
• Strong capability in fleet coordination, dispatch planning, vehicle scheduling, operational tracking and reporting.
• Confident team leadership, customer service and stakeholder communication skills, with the judgement to resolve operational problems and make timely decisions.
• Willingness to work extended or irregular hours when operational demands require.
