Transport Lead - KBL

Role Overview

The Transport Lead owns the day-to-day running of a road freight operation, turning customer demand into dispatch plans, vehicle allocations and delivery schedules that hold up under real-world pressure. Working across drivers, controllers, planners, suppliers and customer-facing teams, this role keeps goods moving safely, legally and at the lowest sensible cost. Its impact is direct: reliable collections and deliveries protect contractual service levels, while disciplined fleet and cost management determine whether the operation stays profitable and compliant.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and coordinate daily transport activity so that every load departs inside its agreed dispatch window and arrives within the customer's required timeframe.
• Optimise routing, load building and vehicle allocation, and monitor fleet utilisation for underused or overstretched capacity.
• Track vehicles and shipments in real time using transport management and tracking systems, following up immediately when a driver falls behind, deviates from the plan or hits an unexpected obstacle.
• Supervise transport controllers, planners, drivers and support staff, running daily operational briefings and performance reviews and building capability through coaching, mentoring and training.
• Investigate and resolve service disruptions, delivery failures and customer escalations, working alongside customer service and other internal stakeholders to close issues out.
• Manage fleet availability, servicing and compliance, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, drivers hold valid licences and permits, and all mandatory training is current.
• Monitor and control transport costs across fuel, maintenance, labour and subcontracted capacity, identifying productivity and savings opportunities that do not compromise safety or service quality.
• Manage the performance of transport suppliers and contractors, maintain accurate operational records, and safeguard dispatch documentation, keys, GPS devices, fuel cards and mobile phones.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in logistics, supply chain management or a related discipline, supported by a relevant professional qualification.
• 3–5 years of transport or logistics operations experience, including demonstrable responsibility for coordinating teams, resources and daily service delivery.
• 3–5 years working within a transport logistics, supply chain or FMCG environment.
• Hands-on experience in dispatch planning, route and load optimisation, fleet utilisation, driver monitoring and transport scheduling.
• Practical working knowledge of transport management systems and vehicle or shipment tracking tools.
• Proven ability to resolve operational problems, service disruptions and customer service issues under time pressure.
• Experience supporting Kenya-based transport operations and familiarity with applicable local road transport requirements.
• Fluent written and spoken communication, with the confidence to brief drivers, challenge suppliers and report performance clearly.
