Transport & Fleet Operations Manager
Role Overview
This role owns the end-to-end movement of goods across a mixed fleet, balancing daily dispatch decisions against service promises, safety standards, and the cost of every kilometre run. Working at the centre of a busy logistics operation, the post-holder keeps vehicles roadworthy, drivers performing, and clients informed while protecting margin on the transport P&L. It is a hands-on leadership position where operational judgement, commercial discipline, and people management matter in equal measure.
Key Responsibilities
- Run day-to-day transport operations: plan routes, allocate drivers and vehicles, monitor journeys in real time, and adjust schedules when traffic, breakdowns, or demand shifts threaten delivery windows.
- Blend owned and subcontracted capacity: decide when to deploy internal fleet versus third-party hauliers, and hold subcontractors to the same service, safety, and contractual standards as in-house teams.
- Protect fleet availability: oversee preventive and corrective maintenance schedules, track roadworthiness and compliance deadlines, and keep downtime, fuel burn, mileage, and running costs under scrutiny.
- Manage and develop the transport team: coach and supervise drivers, dispatchers, and fleet officers; support recruitment, induction, and refresher training; handle rosters, leave, performance reviews, and disciplinary matters consistently with HR policy.
- Track performance with data: build and interpret KPIs covering cost per trip, on-time delivery, safety incidents, fleet utilisation, and productivity, then act on what the numbers reveal.
- Enforce QHSSE and environmental standards: drive compliance with statutory and internal safety, security, and environmental requirements, and embed eco-driving, fuel-reduction, and emissions-control practices into everyday routines.
- Own the client relationship on transport matters: serve as the main point of contact for service queries and escalations, and work closely with Operations, Finance, Commercial, and QHSSE colleagues to align transport activity with wider business goals.
- Manage budgets and profitability: prepare forecasts and cost-control plans, monitor revenue and operating expenditure, and pursue savings through right-sizing the fleet, renegotiating subcontracting, tightening fuel management, and improving route efficiency.

- Strong leadership, planning, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the composure to prioritise competing demands in a fast-paced logistics setting.
