Role Overview
The Waste Collection Crew Member works alongside a truck driver to collect and transport waste from assigned locations across Nairobi. By loading waste safely, keeping collection points orderly and helping the vehicle operate reliably, this role supports timely sanitation services and safer public spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Travel with the collection crew and gather municipal waste from scheduled locations, including loading refuse into compaction trucks and assisting with skip-bin placement or container exchanges.
- Keep loading areas tidy by clearing scattered debris, preventing waste from escaping during transport and supporting organised clean-up activities.
- Act as a spotter while the driver reverses or manoeuvres, and help protect pedestrians and road users around active collection sites.
- Check work areas for obstacles, alert the driver to hazards and help ensure the vehicle’s load is secure.
- Wash and disinfect relevant vehicle areas and equipment, manage leachate safely, and return tools to their designated storage places.
- Assist with routine vehicle checks, including lights, tyres, mirrors, hydraulic components and safety equipment; report any faults promptly.
- Use required protective equipment and safe lifting methods, and complete route, inspection and incident records as needed.
- Support urgent sanitation work, such as flood response, disease-control operations and the removal of illegally dumped waste.
Requirements & Qualifications
- KCSE certificate or an equivalent qualification.
- At least one year of practical experience in waste collection, sanitation, construction or other physically demanding logistics work.
- Basic knowledge of safe waste handling, traffic awareness, vehicle inspection procedures and manual handling practices.
- Good physical stamina for lifting, repeated manual tasks, climbing onto vehicles and walking extended routes.
- Availability for early starts, weekend or public-holiday shifts, and work in changing weather conditions.
- Dependability, a cooperative approach, attention to safety and the ability to communicate respectfully with the public.
