Trainer – Criminology & Criminal Justice System

Role Overview

The Trainer delivers instruction across criminology and the criminal justice system, guiding trainees through taught sessions, practical work and assessment while ensuring the curriculum reflects current practice in the field. The post sits at the heart of the institution's professional and technical training provision, where learner progress and workplace readiness depend on consistent delivery, accurate assessment records and well-maintained learning resources. Beyond the classroom, the role links teaching to research, employer partnerships and institutional planning so that programmes remain relevant and graduates are properly prepared for the sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver scheduled instruction through lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and other assigned learning activities, adapting delivery to the level and needs of each group.
• Set, administer and mark examinations, practical tasks, assignments and continuous assessment tests, and return constructive feedback to trainees.
• Prepare schemes of work and learning materials, and keep accurate records of trainee attendance, progress and achievement.
• Carry out research that informs curriculum development and review, and verify that learning resources are valid and up to date.
• Supervise trainees during practical work and support their involvement in projects, contests and trade fairs.
• Advise trainees on their professional development, respond to their concerns, and refer those who need additional help to the appropriate support services.
• Requisition and manage the inventory of tools, equipment and other learning resources used in training.
• Build and maintain links with employers and industry partners to create opportunities for experiential learning, training excursions and attachments.
• Contribute to departmental seminars, working groups and committees, and enter assessment and examination results into the records management system within the required timelines.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Criminology & Criminal Justice System or a closely related discipline from an accredited or recognised institution.
• Registration as a Trainer with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
• At least two years of teaching experience at tertiary level or its equivalent, or three years of industry-based experience.
• Certificate from an approved Trainer of Trainers course.
• A professional qualification or membership of a relevant professional association is an added advantage.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to present to groups.
• Critical thinking ability, sound time management and close attention to detail.
