Job Description

Role Overview

This role involves performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations to support physicians in diagnosing and managing patient conditions. Day to day, you will operate sonographic equipment, capture high-quality images, and communicate preliminary findings to the referring clinician while ensuring patient comfort and safety. Your work directly contributes to accurate clinical decision-making within a multidisciplinary healthcare team in Kenya.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for ultrasound procedures by explaining the process, positioning them correctly, and addressing any concerns to reduce anxiety.
  • Operate and adjust ultrasound machines to obtain clear, diagnostic-quality images of targeted anatomical structures.
  • Evaluate images in real-time, applying technical judgment to capture additional views when necessary for complete diagnoses.
  • Record and document patient history, procedure details, and image findings accurately in the health management information system.
  • Collaborate with radiologists and referring physicians to ensure images meet clinical requirements and assist in image interpretation when needed.
  • Monitor and maintain ultrasound equipment, performing routine checks and reporting malfunctions to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Follow infection control and radiation safety protocols, even though ultrasound uses non-ionizing radiation, to maintain a sterile and safe environment.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education to stay current with sonography best practices and technological advancements.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Higher Diploma in Ultrasound and/or Radiology, or a Diploma in Medical Imaging Sciences from a recognized institution.
  • At least one year of practical work experience performing diagnostic ultrasound procedures in a clinical or hospital setting.
  • Current registration and valid license from the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority to practice as an ultrasound technologist.
  • Active membership in the Society of Radiography in Kenya (SORK) as proof of professional standing.
  • Demonstrated report-writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate clinical summaries.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, especially Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) used for patient records and image archiving.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
