Role Overview

This position centres on delivering psychological care and structured therapeutic support to individuals navigating grief, trauma, chronic or acute illness, and other difficult life transitions. Working within a medical environment, the role connects clinical assessment with compassionate, ethics-driven intervention while also contributing to staff wellbeing through employee assistance and training initiatives. The work directly supports the institution’s broader commitment to whole-person care, helping clients restore emotional balance and develop practical coping strategies for lasting change.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments to identify emotional, behavioural, and cognitive patterns affecting clients' wellbeing, then translate findings into clear diagnostic formulations.
• Design individualised treatment plans that combine evidence-based therapeutic techniques with measurable goals, adjusting approaches as clients progress or encounter new challenges.
• Facilitate counselling sessions for clients dealing with trauma, grief and loss, life-limiting illness, and co-occurring mental health conditions, using a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive lens.
• Support the organisation's employee assistance programme by offering confidential psychological support to staff facing stress, interpersonal conflict, or workplace pressures that impact performance and morale.
• Track client outcomes through structured follow-up sessions, documenting progress, refining interventions, and ensuring continuity of care across the treatment journey.
• Collaborate with medical colleagues to integrate psychological care into broader patient treatment, particularly where emotional distress complicates physical health or recovery.
• Develop and deliver training workshops for departmental teams, building psychological awareness and practical skills that align with institutional objectives and enhance workplace resilience.
• Uphold ethical standards and professional boundaries at all times, maintaining accurate records and safeguarding client confidentiality within the legal and regulatory framework.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Valid registration with the Ministry of Health in Kenya and a current practising licence, with no lapses or disciplinary findings.
• A master’s degree in counselling psychology or clinical psychology from a recognised institution.
• Undergraduate training in counselling or a closely related theoretical discipline, providing a solid foundation in psychological models and human development.
• A diploma or higher qualification in counselling, nursing, or medical health counselling demonstrating competence in healthcare-based psychological practice.
• Additional certified training in areas that strengthen therapeutic versatility, such as trauma recovery, chronic illness adjustment, bereavement, or end-of-life care.
• At least two years of relevant professional experience, ideally within a medical or hospital setting where psychological services are integrated with clinical care.
• Demonstrated ability to recognise and respond to a broad spectrum of emotional, social, and psychological challenges across diverse client populations.
• Impartial and non-judgmental approach to differing religious, cultural, and traditional beliefs, respecting each client's worldview without imposing personal values.
• Uncompromising ethical and moral integrity, with a professional demeanour that inspires trust from clients, colleagues, and the wider community.
• Strong interpersonal skills, willingness to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, and a proactive attitude toward continuous learning and professional development.
