Role Overview
This position carries a dual mandate: serving as the technical anchor for power generation bids and driving growth in mission-critical power projects. Day to day, the Solutions Engineer turns customer requirements, consultant specifications, and tender documents into power solutions that are technically compliant, well-engineered, and commercially competitive. The role matters because it connects sales, engineering, and project delivery — helping the business win complex power generation work while making sure the agreed design survives intact through execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical bid response: Own the engineering side of power generation proposals from first enquiry through to contract award, ensuring every submission meets customer requirements and relevant industry standards.
- Design and size power systems: Perform load analysis, generator sizing, and system architecture design, covering diesel and gas generator sets, switchgear, control systems, fuel systems, and power distribution.
- Interpret specifications and tenders: Review consultant specifications and tender packages, confirm compliance, and document acceptable deviations, clarifications, or technical alternatives where needed.
- Prepare costing inputs: Produce accurate technical bills of materials and engineering assumptions so the sales team can build competitive commercial pricing.
- Develop proposal documentation: Draft technical proposals, scopes of work, and supporting engineering documents, then ensure a clean technical handover from sales to the Projects/Execution team once a contract is awarded.
- Target mission-critical opportunities: Focus on data centres, healthcare facilities, industrial manufacturing, commercial real estate, and education campuses, identifying and qualifying projects that align with the company’s capabilities and strategic goals.
- Engage stakeholders and shape winning strategies: Build relationships with developers, colocation operators, EPC/MEP contractors, and consulting engineers, and position bids around reliability, redundancy configurations such as N+1 and 2N, and total cost of ownership.
- Collaborate across functions: Work closely with the Sales Manager, Account Managers, Projects/Execution, Engineering, Product Support, Supply Chain, and Logistics to align design intent, long-lead items, specialised equipment, and project execution needs.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical discipline.
- Core experience: Proven background in a Solutions Engineer, Application Engineer, or Technical Sales role within the power generation industry.
- Mission-critical exposure: Experience with critical power applications such as data centres, hospitals, and similar facilities is strongly preferred.
- Tender and specification fluency: Ability to read, interpret, and respond to consultant specifications and tender documents.
- Generator and power system knowledge: Strong understanding of diesel and gas generator sets, control systems, and power distribution.
- Standards awareness: Familiarity with relevant industry standards such as ISO, IEC, and NFPA for power generation and mission-critical infrastructure.
- Design and sizing tools: Comfort with generator sizing software and electrical design principles; proficiency in AutoCAD or comparable electrical design tools is an advantage.
- Commercial and stakeholder capability: Able to qualify opportunities, engage technical and commercial decision-makers, and translate customer needs into clear engineered solutions.
