Shop Attendant

Role Overview

As a Retail Sales Assistant in a beauty and personal care environment, you will be the first point of contact for customers walking in to buy cosmetics, skincare, haircare, and related products. Your day revolves around understanding what each customer needs, recommending the right items with confidence, and completing sales accurately at the till. This role directly shapes how customers experience the shop, making it central to building repeat business and keeping shelves moving.

Key Responsibilities

• Welcome walk-in customers promptly, establish what they are looking for, and guide them to suitable products on the shelves.
• Explain product features, ingredients, and usage in simple terms so customers can make informed choices, particularly for skincare and haircare items.
• Drive sales by upselling and cross-selling complementary items, and by following up on promotions or offers currently running in-store.
• Operate the till and point-of-sale system to process cash, card, and mobile payments, issue receipts, and reconcile daily takings.
• Arrange, face up, and rotate stock on displays so shelves stay full, tidy, and visually appealing, including front-facing fast-moving lines.
• Monitor stock levels and flag low or out-of-stock products to the supervisor in good time to avoid lost sales.
• Handle customer questions, complaints, and exchanges politely, escalating issues that fall outside your authority.
• Keep the shop floor, counters, and product testers clean and organised throughout the shift.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Education: Minimum KCSE certificate or an equivalent qualification.
• Experience: Previous work in retail sales, beauty, cosmetics, skincare, or haircare is a distinct advantage. Experience gained in a beauty shop, cosmetics store, supermarket, pharmacy, or similar retail setting is preferred.
• Technical skills: Basic computer literacy and comfort using a point-of-sale (POS) system or till.
• Customer service: Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with a friendly and approachable manner.
• Sales ability: Proven ability to engage customers, close a sale, and meet set targets.
• Personal attributes: Reliability, a tidy and presentable appearance, and willingness to work shifts, including weekends and busy trading periods.
