Role Overview
This position is for someone who owns the underlying platform that every engineering team builds on, treating infrastructure as a product and fellow developers as the end users. On a daily basis, you will manage Kubernetes environments, automate cloud resources with code, tune CI/CD pipelines, and build internal tooling that removes friction from development. Your work directly determines how quickly product teams can ship features reliably, so your focus is on reducing toil, enforcing best practices, and making the well-architected path the default path.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and maintain resilient Kubernetes clusters and containerised workloads using Helm, Istio, and ArgoCD within a GitOps workflow.
- Build and enhance an internal developer platform by creating self-service tools, golden paths, and guardrails that let product teams deploy without deep infrastructure expertise.
- Write infrastructure as code with AWS CDK and Terraform, keeping cloud environments repeatable, auditable, and aligned with the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
- Operate and improve monitoring and logging stacks (Prometheus, Loki, Grafana, ELK) to give teams clear visibility into Kubernetes and Java application health.
- Develop and maintain Java-based backend services and automation scripts that support platform workflows and solve operational problems.
- Optimise CI/CD pipelines on GitHub Actions, ensuring fast, reliable, and secure delivery of applications from commit to production.
- Manage cloud networking components such as VPCs, subnets, NAT and internet gateways, VPC peering, PrivateLink, and load balancers to ensure secure and efficient traffic flow.
- Work with relational databases and event pipelines, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and Apache Kafka, to ensure data services run smoothly alongside platform workloads.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 4 years of professional experience developing production applications in Java or C#.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience deploying, managing, scaling, and rightsizing Kubernetes clusters and their underlying compute, storage, and network resources.
- At least 2 years designing and operating public cloud environments, ideally AWS, with practical knowledge of cloud security, cost optimisation, and resilience patterns.
- Solid experience with GitOps-based CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and Helm for workload deployments.
- A product mindset for internal tooling: you can spot developer pain points, prototype thoughtful solutions, and drive adoption across multiple teams.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and domain-driven design principles.
- Effective communication skills and comfort working independently in a fully remote, cross-cultural environment.
- Experience with Agile/Scrum and applied AWS Well-Architected reviews is a plus.
What We Offer / Why Join
You will be part of a fully remote, diverse team spanning South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana, working with clients across different industries and problem spaces. The environment is fast moving and encourages continuous learning, open feedback, and sharing of technical ideas. This role gives you the autonomy to own meaningful platform decisions and the chance to shape internal tooling that amplifies the productivity of every engineer in the organisation.
