Job Summary
We are seeking a highly systematic, technically precise Senior Mechanical Project Engineer to champion the delivery of end-to-end building services frameworks across East Africa. Your primary objective is to spearhead mechanical engineering workflows through every phase of the project lifecycle—moving smoothly from initial concept creation and detailed layout design through to construction site supervision, system commissioning, and structural defect management. Acting as the core technical anchor on complex assignments, you will coordinate multi-disciplinary MEP designs while ensuring uncompromising compliance with international engineering codes. This position bridges advanced system engineering with practical project management, offering an ambitious building services specialist the opportunity to guide junior engineers and oversee large-scale construction installations on site.
Scope of Work
Design Engineering & Technical Documentation
- Architect comprehensive mechanical concepts, drafting authoritative Concept Design Reports and Basis of Design (BoD) blueprints for major building developments.
- Produce and run detailed schematic plans, load calculations, technical specifications, and equipment schedules for HVAC, plumbing, drainage, fire protection, and LPG pipelines.
- Align all engineering designs with international standards, including BS/EN, NFPA, ASHRAE, and the Kenyan Building Code frameworks.
- Package clean tender document packets, resolving incoming technical queries from bidding contractors and compiling objective evaluation reports.
- Coordinate mechanical design spaces with architects, structural engineers, and electrical engineering teams to avoid physical spatial conflicts.
Site Supervision & Project Execution
- Command full engineering ownership of mechanical services installations from early contract award through to physical structural handover.
- Execute rigorous site inspections to cross-verify physical contractor progress against validated engineering blueprints and contract specifications.
- Anchor technical site progress meetings, serving as the definitive, frontline mechanical engineering point of contact for developers and contractors.
- Isolate installation non-compliances, generating detailed site inspection logs and mapping out corrective pathways for executive review.
Contractor Administration & System Coordination
- Evaluate technical submittals, contractor shop drawings, operational method statements, Requests for Information (RFIs), and engineering proposals.
- Provide fast, field-ready resolutions for structural design anomalies and unexpected site layout challenges.
- Mentor and provide structured technical guidance, design calculations support, and QA review frameworks to junior engineers and inspectors.
Quality Assurance, Testing & Commissioning
- Champion the firm's strict QA/QC compliance procedures across both early design iterations and physical construction environments.
- Witness, calibrate, and coordinate final testing and commissioning protocols for installed HVAC plant equipment, fire suppression mainlines, and water pumps.
- Audit and sign off on technical commissioning data sets, as-built schematic changes, and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) library records.
- Conduct strict practical completion inspections, documenting punch lists and tracking structural defects during the liability period.
Commercial Support & Progress Reporting
- Evaluate contractor valuation claims, project variation adjustments, and mechanical material cost appraisals to support budget integrity.
- Draft highly objective technical reports, system condition evaluations, and macro-level project timeline updates for corporate stakeholders.
- Implement minor blueprint updates and CAD/Revit layout alterations to match verified site configurations.
Skills & Experience Required
Minimum Entry Criteria
- Academic Foundation: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering from an accredited institutional body.
- Professional Licensing: Fully registered and in active good standing with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).
- Industry Background: Minimum of 3 years of progressive, verifiable experience specializing in building services designs, ideally operating within an established MEP engineering consulting practice.
- Standards Competency: Deep working knowledge of BS/EN directives, NFPA protection standards, ASHRAE climate codes, and local statutory building regulations.
- Software Mastery: Mandatory, high-level proficiency in utilizing AutoCAD and Revit MEP platforms for modeling and layout design.
Professional Attributes
- Interdisciplinary Agility: Exceptional ability to interpret, synthesize, and seamlessly overlay structural and electrical engineering layouts onto mechanical plans.
- Communication Precision: Crystal-clear technical writing capabilities, with the ability to summarize dense engineering anomalies into actionable site directions.
- Problem-Solving Drive: Strong analytical mindset focused on tackling unexpected field-engineering errors through data-backed code applications.
What We Offer
- Consultancy Scale: Take a lead engineering role on highly complex, prominent commercial and institutional building developments across the East African region.
- Technical Growth: Refine your executive engineering path by managing multi-disciplinary MEP dynamics, steering project handovers, and guiding junior technical talent.
- Structured Network: Work closely alongside seasoned industry directors, strengthening your visibility across reputable developer networks and professional bodies.
